Thread: Cannot shave my neck properly!

I've just had my evening shave and put the pulling the neck skin onto the face tip to practice.
I was surprised how much of the neck this cleared. To get the rest I pulled the skin down into the clavicle while tilting my head back and away to get it as flat as possible. The result, I've removed more hair and it feels smooth WTG
I am a little red but think it was more sloppy/inconsistent blade angle. Nothing a bit of sudocreme won't sort out!
Not the only good thing today either. Free smaples of Crabtree and Evelyn shaving cream and post shave balm and a new shaving bowl for 50 pence, it is rough/nobbly on the inside and whips up a ton of lather in no time!
A very happy day. Thanks for the tips guys, it is genuinely appreciated. Oh I tried using the other hand and it felt wrong. Left for left and right for right seems to feel correct if not yet natural.

Got to love sudocreme, it's been a blessing during my early straight shaving experience.

Well, I've just had tonights shave and the only painful part was the telling off by my wife for my series of 5 minute baths each night for the past 2 weeks, apparently we have a fully functional shower?
I've really took my time and experimented a little especially on the neck with stretching. A very comfy method I found that allows the razor to pass down unhindered by my hand was to use the opposite hand to stretch the skin up over the jaw which means I don't have to tilt back and can see better too.
First shave without a slathering of sudocreme on the neck afterwards
I can't thank you guys who've replied or the site and it's contributors enough. I stopped shaving daily when I was no longer forced to and have looked scruffy since. No more!

Thanked: 983I find using the opposite hand opposite side is a good way to start off at the highest point. It gives you a good visual from the hairline and down a few inches. Just another tip that works for me,but has nothing to do with the OP's question.

Thanked: 43My neck also offers me the most challenging area to shave. The whiskers grow paralell to an imaginary line from adam's apple to ear lobe.
For me it has been a bit hit and miss as occasionally I do a pretty good job there and sometimes I don't.
This morning was pretty good and I made a mental note that tweaking the shave soap lather seemed to make a difference in how smoothly the blade traveled. I thinned the lather out a bit so it was pretty wet. I then cleaned the blade with a hand soap (it leaves no scum) so that it wouldn't have a thin layer of soap scum on it. I went at it slowly with a slightly slicing stroke at a fairly steep angle with no pressure.
I know that sounds like a dangerous move but it went well. I think today's magic had a lot to do with the wet lather and removing any possible soap scum from the edge.
I have noticed that most all of the shave soaps I have used leave a sticky scum line at water level in the sink.
My theory was if it was sticky on the sink when it starts to dry it would be sticky on the blade"s bevel as well.
Anyway it was one of the nicest shaves of the neck area to date.
I am also wondering what effect soap scum has played with respect to maintenance of the edge. Has there been a thin layer of moist scum lurking on my razor's edge?
Today I cleaned the razor's edge with the hand soap that leaves no scum and rinsed it well before I dried it with a piece of TP.
I am going to try to make that a part of my daily routine.
Goodbye soap scum.

Thanked: 43Day two, Sucess again. I guess all I had to do was get the cutting edge a fraction of the thickness of a hair closer to the skin and goodbye whiskers that like to lay against my neck as close as a snake in the grass!
It was not a perfect shave but a very noticeable improvement for me.
