Thanked: 2I have used Kaboom Bath room cleaner on a DE to remove all the soap scum. It's purple when you spray it on, and turns white when its done (a minute or two). I don't know if this can also be done with a straight.

Thanked: 43Thanks Mick, I was beginning to think I would have to settle for a fair shave on that part of my neck.
The left side of the neck in the same area requires some special attention but the right side is where the real challenge lies.
I haven't tried to use the left hand for shaving but notice that many are using the technique with sucess. When I get to feeling up to the challenge I will have to give it a try.
It might be tough trying to teach this old dog a new trick.

Thanked: 983If I could teach myself, then so can you. Takes more patience with getting comfortable with the left hand than anything else, so be patient and practice and you'll get there.

I'm getting there. It's smooth WTG but quite spikey ATG when you run your fingers over it.
I still feel I'm applying too much pressure to the neck resting in burn or not enough resulting in me looking unhinged (smooth face, hairy neck).
My issue is around the Adam's apple where the hair grows sideways.
I will get there. I love using a straight and will never go back to cartridge razors.

Thanked: 983The adams apple area is hard, and no amount of advice is going to be perfect for you as the indiidual, as we all have our own facial hair idiosyncrosies to deal with. One thing that might helo and applies to just about everyone. The less pressure you apply the more passes from different directions you can get away with, without having razor burn. What you think is light, just might not be light enough. As you said, you're getting there, and that's all that matters.
I find I'm paying more attention these days to how I do things. I never gave it much thought, as I would experiment to find what works, then I would 'Set and Forget', as it is just shaving for me, but at least it's enjoyable using a cut-throat. It does make it hard to help others when you do that though, so I've gone back to paying attention in the hopes that I might be able to benefit other people with my wonderous wisdom (Much like everyone else here ). And you thought you were unhinged. HA!

All advice gratefully received. I'm still no where near as red after a shave and cut myself less to, I have no idea how that is but it is.
I'm also liking that one pass will smarten you up just enough to get you through. Still get 20 minutes of me time and don't look scruffy and the skin gets a break too

Thanked: 983One pass should definitely be good enough for a days work, and there is nothing wrong with that, just don't expect too much when it comes to smooth to touch running your hand against the grain of growth. It should look perfectly fine though.
