Thanked: 4Razor storage
I wanted to get some opinions on straight razor storage. So far, I've just been storing the razor in the original DOVO case (outside the bathroom), but from what I've read it sounds like that might not be the best option. I was thinking about getting this case and putting a 1 gram silica packet in there as well. Will that be sufficient to keep the moisture level down and prevent rusting?

Thanked: 0I think if you buy a kind of substance that sucks the humidity then you can store it in any opened case. I'm not so sure about this leather case, it feels like the drawer of your side bed shelf with some anti-humidity might be much better solution.
I do not have so much experience with SR unfortunately but I do with some other metals and that's what I do usually.
I do not trust the breathability of leather that much.
Hope that helps

I would be hesitant to store any razor long-term in a leather case. My main concern would actually be any chemicals left in the leather from the tanning process that may affect either the blade or scales. I tend ot think of leather cases as more short-term solutions for travel, etc., rather than long-term storage.
OK... Just realized that the one linked is "imitation leather". So no tanning concerns then, but breathability would be a concern for me - even more so than with leather. You would effectively be encasing your razor in plastic, so some sort of humidity control would be important.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

If the case is permeable to water vapor then the capacity of the silica gel will be wasted very quickly. Cardboard cases are moderately permeable. A plastic or metal case could be some what permeable due to the seam.
I would recommend that you just put the silica gel packet in the case you have. If you do go for a leather case I wouldn't use a silica packet.
Upon looking at the listing you posted it later states that it is imitation leather. Due to that it is rather likely that it would be impermeable to water vapor, so a silica gel packet may work rather well in it.

I can't tell where you're posting from but unless you live somewhere where the humidity level is super high I think you're better off keeping them in the open air. I have kind of a two stage system (it's not particularly humid where I live) consisting of a toothbrush holder that I put razors in when they're "in the rotation" and a Thiers Issard box that I keep them in when I'm not going to be using them for a while. I have a rotation that handles 11 razors pretty well - 4 in the toothbrush holder and 7 in the box. I take the one I'm going to use to shave with from the toothbrush holder (I go clockwise) and the one that's "oldest" goes into the box and and the "oldest" one there replaces it in the toothbrush holder.
Sounds a lot more complicated than it is and it really helps me to rotate through them uniformly.
Of course this all goes to hell if you've got more than 11 razorsGreg

The humidity level in my bedroom is 28%. My razors reside in a bureau in the bedroom exposed to open air. Trapping them in any enclosed space is unnecessary and invites unseen problems.

Thanked: 2Here is an idea, this is a pen display case I picked up for less than $20 at an antique mall. I just put a couple of silica packs in and it's good to go. I live in a Florida where there is lots of humidity, but have not had in problems yet.

I live in a high humidity area. Mine are kept in plastic pencil boxes with a 2" cloth patch that is very lightly oiled.

Razor storage
Personally if the original Dovo case is working for you keep on using it.

Thanked: 983What about an Alembi-case? Is Alembic still doing those? That's where I would put my money if I wanted a decent case.
