It is thick but you only need a little. Rub a small amount in the palm of your hand then spread it evenly across your face. Does not hurt if your palm is a little wet too. Let your skin absorb the oil before applying shaving soap. I hope this helps.

It does, actually. Thanks. I've been experimenting with how much water to use at the various stages and I think that will absolutely help. I skipped it this morning and I've been off all day. Cheers!

BTW, you also have non-oil pre shaves out there, such as Proraso and Castle Forbes.
