Phunni....Tell you what... Shoot me a pm with your address. I have a straight that I could hone up for you and strop it too,so all you have to do for the first shave is take it out of the box and Shave....FOR FREE !!!!! And as far as stropping for your second shave...you could strop it on newspaper. It doesn't get any cheaper than that !!!!!

What I have found, and I'm little over 2 weks in, is that I'm getting there with a real straight.
If you look at my earlier posts I was getting razor burn on my neck pretty bad.
I'm taking my time with the shave and still apply too much pressure in parts, the witch hazel gives a decent idea where you've used too much pressure.
I've settled on doing 1 pass for now which cleans me up nicely. It gets me through the day and gives a shave as good as they disposables I used to use on my neck (I had a beard because of shaving irritation) without the rash and pain.
My first rew shaves were terrible but I'm persisting. I'm at the point, although still learning, where I look forward to my shave an unless I do something wrong I know it's going to be comfortable.
I really do sympathise with the rashes and the discomfort, it's all I knew when I was a soldier. I had to shave every day and was a mess. I looked forward to leave to go beardy wierdy for a few weeks.
When I left I grew a beard, I went bald, the beard stayed but was shaped. My wife bought me a straight for my 30th and I'm clean shaven again.
I would say that I am smooth WTG. I tried XTG and ATG a couple of times but I don't have the ability to do that without looking like I've poured a boiling kettle on my face, yet anyway.
Another is your prep. Look at what barbers do and what the guys on here do, I'm liking a hot towel before a shave now. Soak it in the sink in tap hot water, ring it out and slap it on the face. Play around and see if any of it works for you. I've got the wife's head done in at present with shaving but it's more comfortable than it ever has been and getting better.
I've also changed shaving creams. I've always used Ingram which you can get at boots and superdrug. It's good and has menthol in it. My dad uses it as did my grandad. I still like it but found the Real Shaving Company cream and Body Shop Maca Root are a lot better. I'm planning to try some of the Lush stuff too.
Good luck with the new straight.Last edited by DaveTheGeordie; 01-16-2013 at 02:30 PM.

Thanked: 10You might also take a look at how hot the water is that you are prepping your face with. For me, hot water makes my skin tender and very easily prone to irritation. Try tepid or cool water. You may be surprised. And as others have said, get a regular straight as they are far kinder to your face, especially if you are just starting out.

4 pages gives you a nice thickness or cushion to strop on

I still occasionally get red after a shave if I didn't do things quite right. Then sometimes I look like a million bucks! I'm still learning though!
Good luck and happy shaving!
