Red face Uh, I messed up my strop...

Second question for today: the other morning I got careless when stropping my razor and accidentally went the *wrong* way on the strop a little ways before the blade came to a screeching halt. Now there's several small gouges in the side of the strop. Anyone have any suggestions how to get those out? When I strop the edge of the razor *the right way* it catches on the little gouges. Will this affect the sharpness? Agghhh...

Just about everybody does this on their first strop. Yes, you can fix it. Get some flat pumice stone and rub the nicks out and smooth out the transition, then wipe it off thoroughly with a damp towel, then rub in some conditioner and let it dry overnight. You should be good to go, though you'll always have those reminders to be careful.

I actually did this too with a razor I got from Joe Chandler.....The thing was Sharp as hell and I was going a little fast and nicked my strop pretty good..

I don't know if this is bad or good but, I used a little superglue to glue the flap of leather down, then sanded it smooth and applied some dressing to the affected area. It seemed to have fixed it up quite nicely and is hardly noticeable.

He means leather conditioner or strop dressing. If you are desperate you can use a bit of olive oil but go easy with it.

Olive oil will go rancid on you. Either use strop dressing or mink oil or neatsfoot oil.

    Ilija,

Has that actually ever happend to you? I noticed on the RazorCentral site they recommend Olive Oil. Just curious as I have been using it for a few years. Its hard for me to resist anything that says Extra Virgin in the name. :-)

Remember that it's made from the really ugly olives...

I've had olive oil go rancid on me. That's why I never used it on an implement that I intend to keep for decades.

Where's a good place to get some of this stuff? Any brands that you recommend?
