Thanked: 0strop question
Good evening Gurus. I have a cheap strop from e-bay. It has 2 seperate parts , one being the usual leather and the other a pvc type material which is quite soft. Can you tell me what the latter pvc length is used for , or is it , as i suspect absolutely useless.? Should i finish on the leather or the softer synthetic ?

Thanked: 1587I'm not sure - when you say pvc, it is plastic? I'm not sure I've ever seen a plastic strop before. It may be an attempt at a "canvas"-like piece, but I honestly don't know and it is quite difficult to see in your photos I'm afraid.
I'd perhaps stick with just using the leather side. Using the plastic side probably won't hurt, but I don't think it would help either.

I think his "PVC" side is a synthetic linen, which is becoming more and more popular nowadays.
It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Possible a nylon web like seat belt material?
Isn't that to be used pre-leather? 10-12 round trips before finishing on the leather?

Thanked: 67I have one of those. The synthetic side seems to be a PVC coating on cloth, and I really like it for stropping after a hone, before stropping on leather. It makes a "zeep! zeep!" noise, and has medium/heavy draw. The material is very flexible and slightly stretchy, so keep it good and taught during stropping - you don't want it rolling round the edge at all.

Thanked: 220Use the leather last. I usually do 30 laps on the linen (or PVC, as you're calling it), and then 60 on the leather, if that helps.
