Unknown black whetstone, any ideas?
Hey guys,
This stone popped up on Marktplaats. It looks real fine, but don't know what kind of stone it is!
Any clues?

Could it be a Thuringan ? The Water Of Ayr Scot's hone is black. One of those that if the price is right it is worth the gamble that it will be a good hone IMO. Once it is lapped it may end up being a gray rather than black. I've seen that happen before.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yes, saw that one too. Format suggests it is British slate of some sort. Thuringians aren't usually this flat and mostly haven't got rounded edges and corners on all sides. Arkansas is a possibility, but there seems to be a single rather deep scratch - deeper than Arkansas' hardness permits. Barber hone or other artificial stone are options too.
Had the price been lower, I'd jumped on this one to find out. As it is, to me 30 dollars is a bit much for this gamble.

Could it be like this one? This is Aluminum Oxide. My camera makes it look brown, but its real color is black. It makes a very good edge. you use soapy water with it.
