Default The search for a honer nearby Enschede or Haarlem (The Netherlands)

    Hi everyone!

I just started out with my straight razor and I think I made a booboo :P I bought my razor (Mühle 5/8 Round-point) from manandshaving.nl where they said it would be shave ready.
3 shaves in I have a lot of resistance going against the grain even thought I tried my best getting a good foamy and wet lather and doing a bit of stropping before and after every shave. Somewhere along the line, my razor might have become a bit dull.

Just to be sure(as I have absolutly no point of reference I can base my opinion on) I would like to get it checked by someone and if possible stand next to the person so I can see what is happening to learn from it.

So, without further ado: I am looking for a member who can help me with my razor to see if it is dull and if so help hone it. I do not have any stones or experience honing.
The reward is a sixpack or a good bottle of wine (or something else if you don't prefer alcohol ) or a bit of money if you don't want to do it for free. I live in Enschede
and I travel to Haarlem sometimes in the weekend. If anyone lives nearby (~20km radius) and is able/wants to help me, give me a heads-up!

    Thanks!

And you might also try an advanced search in the members list for someone close to you. This thread maybe 14 pages deep before someone in your area comes along to read it.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I live on the west side of Amsterdam (Geuzenveld) very close to Haarlem, if you can come over we'll make sure you leave with a sharp and smooth shaving razor and I'll show you my way of doing it (honing and stropping).
If it's more convenient you can mail it here and I'll hone it and mail it back the next day.
All free of charge of course and with the choice of naniwa synthetic, coticule, Chinese or Japanese natural stones.
    PM me if you're interested.

I just had a very nice evening with Puerco! He showed me his collection and everything and honed my razor for me. Afterwords, he even let me try it out in his house to see if my irritation was gone. The combination of the new honing and a tip on how much water to use with the lather made the shave with the razor even better than with the shavette. All and all it was a great learning experience!

It was fun, I don't meet a lot of people who share the passion for the straight razor. And it's nice to help a fellow straight shaver along!
Fathardie's razor was not really dull but looking at the edge under magnification I couldn't imagine it was a very comfortable edge though so I gave it a touchup on my JNAT (shoubudani) with nagura progression ending with tomo nagura and some final strokes on clear water.
After that it looked much better and passed the hanging hair test before stropping and after stropping it did root out and root in just as easily so we whipped up some Cella and gave it a testshave that worked out great.
Fathardie, your technique is good but keep working on your lather, keep it hydrated at all times so it stays slick and protective throughout the whole shave! Better to watery than to have it dry up causing the razor to drag.
When something is up or your razor gets dull feel free to contact me next time. Thanks for the beer, I appreciate that!!!

Hey Puerco and Rolf, what would you say sometime soon we have a little get-together? I'm one year in and would like someone to judge my honing capabilities, see what I can improve. Of course, anyone else is more than welcome to join.

If more applicable, I will ask a moderator to move this to a separate thread.
