Have made some out of Bamboo, the problem is the stalks are not thick enough to be turned as they are hollow.
I once also laminated bamboo into a solid block but it is so fibrous,It will not turn well.

Turning? Why turn. Just get a stalk the right size and just glue the knot in it. The stuff has to be as tough as nails. Why I just saw an old Star Trek Episode where Jim Kirk uses a stalk to make a canon.

I believe you could make a cannon out of well seasoned bamboo.stuff is tuff as nails.
This box I made out of very large timber bamboo,is for Kamisori blades, the supports are padauk, the Ivory pce reads Kamisori in Katakana.
Even using Carbide tools, this is very hard wood,If it can be called a wood as it is really a grass.

I've turned a bunch of Bamboo, it's laminated. Here's one I turned for myself, installed a horse hair knot. I burned it with a propane torch. Also a pair of ear plugs that someone asked me to make for them, I like working with it.

I think he means those things the natives use to attract to opposite sex. Makes the ear lobs look sexy when they have a hole in them the size of a quarter. Matching lip plug optional.
