Thanked: 3Is this a shaving brush?
My Dad recently gave me this brush that he said was my grandpa's shaving brush, but it has REALLY stiff bristles. I've never seen anything like it. Is it a shaving brush? No way would I put this to my face. Way to course!

From the size it would have to be a shave brush. Talc brushes and brushes to clean hair off after a haircut are large and softer. maybe over time something happened to it or maybe your Grandpa was a really tough guy and liked stiff bristles.

Thanked: 1184That was my guess ...all mane. Clean it up and put some conditioner on it. Will still be full of back bone but may feel a little better.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

That's very cool to have something of your Grandfathers. Enjoy it and I hope it proves useful for you.

Maybe it was used to bring up a lather, but you applied to your face with your fingers?

That thing should not be stiff or course at all. I am guessing it needs a good cleanup to get rid of any junk on the hairs (a mild soap or hair shampoo, followed by a conditioner), and then let it dry. Hopefully that should restore it.
Heirloom pieces like that are awesome. If it was mine, I'd keep and use it. I'd even have it re-knotted if it was beyond salvation as it is. Best of luck!

Thay are very hard and not supposed to be soft..
That's the same Bristle and hair i had in a old Kent brush from WW2 1945 NOS. So yes its a shaving brush but yeah thay got more backbone then anything i ever tried. Let is soak in hot water for a good 10 mins then use it, it will soft up alittle bit but its not made for wussy's

I concur with most of the posters here; really cool to have something passed down through the family, and I would have to "man up" and use it, lol.
The SR and the D/E I use both were my Father-in-Law's. It's an honor to have them, and to shave with them.
