Thread: Why sould i glue those Pure badgers ?

A friend of mine gave me 2 pure badger knots
Base knot 24mm and Loft at 67mm,he get them from PC Woodcrafts and Pens.
If you remember my previous "how i test my knots" you can understand better the procedure:

Here they are out of the box:





I wash them,let them dry,i load a soap and i made palm lather
I rinse them,let the dry,here how they look like:





I took each one as is dry and made some swirling movements in my palm
No hard push just simple moves as i do in my face lather
It's not a torture,few times left to right and right to left as a normal shaving,here the results:




For me that's a knot failure,no good backbone,not adequate for a proper shaving with swirling movements,just painting that i don't like it !


In comparison with a Frank Shaving pure badger knot,24mmm knot base glued few mm inside the handle.
Here they are before the test,both of 3 of them:



Here they are after the test,take a look the FS's,almost as it was,stiff and ready for more action
The PC WP's they just collapsed !



How can i make the decision to glue those knots ?
Would any of you take the risk and glue those knots ?
Tell me your opinion.

Wow! It looks like the hairs are becoming knotted in the center. Ran into this with my horse hair knot too. Maybe they don't use enough hair to support the others.
Although I will point out that typically I believe most brush manufactures will tell you not to lather your face in circles, but to paint the lather on your face.(seems silly to me, because you load the brush that way using circles)
I wonder if you would weigh them What the difference would be? I'm just curious if one brand is over/under stuffed

Wow those look bad. That's one reason why I stick with TGN knots. The quality is always there. Hopefully these didn't cost you much.

You could always use them for sweeping beard clippings into the sink. I have an old Boar brush that's shot, when I trim my beard I use it to sweep the clippings back into the sink when I'm done.

Here is an example of what I consider the ultimate test.
8 yrs ago I made myself a 7 day set of brushes,all the same Knots (TGN,24mm Grade As)all the same loft (48mm as I face lather)all the same handle style.Up until I retired 2 yrs ago,I shaved 7 days a week so they have seen many lathering cycles.
I have never cleaned a shaving brush,Rinse,Shake,towel dry, hang overnight.
These brushes do not shed,you may get a hair now and than,the tips do not curl or get deformed.
They are yellowed as all I use are tallow based soaps (has zero effect on anything)
I do not understand these testing proceedures but to each his own,but I do know what works.I also Know, you buy cheap, you get cheap.

15 $ each knot is cheap for you ?
Take a look at the FS knot in the last 2 photos,cost 6.5 $ but works great
His black badgers also work perfect for me,they are cheap too.
According to you how much money my friend could give for a pure badger knot ? 20-30 $ ?

Bill, those knots look really good for being 8yrs old. No doubt having a 7 day set has helped preserve them. Nice none the less...
I have a TGN that has seen daily use for 1 yr. until I made more brushes for myself, it's 4 yrs old now & the center of that brush appears as Doryferon pic's, I face lather also

I believe $15 for a knot is very inexpensive,If your happy with them thats all that matters.

I did said anything about an "ultimate-one and only-the best-unique" test anywhere.
Also i haven't got 8 years of my life to spend for a knot to decide if it's good or not
Then i need 70 for a wife,50 for a car etc.

The majority of knots from China in ebay are in that cost
You can see them in every shaving forum.
I have not 60$ to buy a High Mountain White Badger.
