Default Your thoughts on Simpson Chubby 2 and 3 super

    Gentlemen,

Some years ago, I had either the Simpson Chubby 2 or 3 in super badger, I forget which, and to my regret sold it. I am considering buying another one. Those of you who have used these brushes — again, in super and not best, as I dislike the Simpson best knots, and also not in the synthetic knot — please give me your overall impression of each. Maybe that will jar my memory. Thanks.

I just bought a chubby 1 in super. I know you enjoy the larger knots but my first impression of the 1 was how small it was. By far the smallest handle I own. Knot size was on the smaller size too. Simpson does vary from brush to brush I know but was disappointed at 21mm for a brush that should be closer to 23.

The first use was mixed. I am very impressed that a brush can have that much backbone yet be extremely soft on the face. Unfortunately it shed. It shed so that I was shaving badger off my face.

Subsequent uses however have been outstanding. After the initial shedding and sticker shock for something so small, I am very pleased with the brush. It is packed very dense and had backbone to spare and is the softest or rivals the softest brush I own.

For me, the Chubby 1 Super Badger is an awesome brush, holds lots of lather, and is so densely packed I got the backbone I was looking for. Went back and tried an older favourite brush and was shocked at how mushy it felt.

The Simpson's Chubby 2 in best badger I grabbed from the Classifieds here is wonderful to use as well, the first bigger brush I've really enjoyed using, but would love to have had the brush in super badger, the backbone and density isn't where I'd expect, still far superior to anything I've used before - so I agree super badger is the way to go.

My BAD is bad, and the thought of a Chubby 3 in Super Badger is intriguing me more and more, but for me, I completely get why Simpson's brushes or so nice, so if you prefer the bigger brushes, then go for the 3 in super badger, in the end, if you're in for a dime...let us know what you decide.

I think it is analogous to a Rolex watch. Outstanding brush, but you don't have to spend nearly that much to have a great one. I like to look at it, but that's pretty much all I do. It has an iconic look, like a NY Yankee uniform.

This is mine. It is a Chubby 2 Super Badger. I bought it for, I think, $210 second hand five years ago when I was new to traditional wetshaving and I thought I could try everything. I checked a couple of places online and it costs $261.

Curiousity got the best of me and I used the brush for the first time in probably several years today. It's a terrific brush, absorbent and luxurious without a doubt.

Darn, and here I was going to try and solicit that brush off you....in many way's I had to re-learn how to load the brush and face lather. With my old brushes, I'd dig the brush into the puck, and then aggressively face lather (using circles) to get the scritchy factor.

Had to learn with the Simpson's, to use the tip of the brush to load, and the tips only to face lather...and aggressive circles on the face didn't work as well as more up and down, have Badgister to thank for that tip.

Obie, I had the Chubby 2 in the older Somerset Manchurian and I often said it could take the chrome off of a trailer hitch. I love scritchy but this was too much of a good thing and I sold it.

Years later, after the Vulfix takeover, I bought a Chubby 3 Manchurian. I was apprehensive that it would not be equal to the old Somerset brushes, but I was pleasantly surprised. The quality is if not equal, even better.

As for 2 versus 3. Naturally the 3 will have the taller loft, and probably a larger diameter knot. I only bought a 3 because they did not show a 2 in Manchurian at the time, and I was 'hot to trot.'

I am now happy that I got the 3. Although the knot is large, as is the loft, this somewhat mitigates the tremendous backbone that these brushes have, and while it remains scritchy, it is somewhat more flexible that the shorter lofted Chubby 2. Of course YMMV.

I have the Chubby 3 in both Super and Manchurian.
    Both are stellar brushes.
Big, beautiful and with just the right backbone combined with lovely soft tips.

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

    Gentlemen,

I chose the Simpson Chubby 3 in super. To purchase it, of course, I had to sell my Lamborghini. Now, I must also sell my Ferrari Testarossa to make the $234 for the Simpson Tulib 4 in super badger. First, though, I must get some gas for the car. Not today, though, because we have a blizzard here in the province and I'm not leaving the house. I left San Francisco years ago for this? OY!

Cool Obie, did you pull the trigger on the 4 yet ? I had a Tulip 4 and a Tulip 2 in Super. I wish now that I hadn't sold the 2. I sold the 4 because it was just too tall a loft for me. Even at the size 4 it was scritchy, and a marvellous brush, but I decided I needed a 3. Haven't gotten that yet ..... no Lamborghinis to sell unfortunately.
