They always have good backbone. At first you will have a scritch sensation with them. With mine it took probably 10-15 shaves before most of that was gone. 3 years in with that brush and it still seems to be getting better with age. Now it's really soft at the tips but still has really good backbone.

Boar knots shed a fair bit on the break in, It's normal and once it's got rid of those loose hairs it should stabilise. The smell also goes pretty fast, You can shampoo them to remove the smell or just lather up with something potent like proraso and it'll clear out in a couple of shaves.
