Thread: Horse Hair Recommendation

Hello all,

I am a Chubby 2 type of guy, I swirl and splay on my face, strangely my Semouge 620 splays too much on my face so I hold the hairs between my fingers sometime when soaping, but Thater 4152/2 doesn't scatter that much as 620.
So, I guess I need a small brush, and the second thing is softness and good backbone also not pricky at all and less scritchy brush as much as possible would be nice after break in period.
I am reading some people mentions some horse brushes become equally soft to best badger brushes after break-in, that sounds great, but I don't/can't use the big brushes this is the question.
In short my question is what would be your recommendation for Chubby 2 size in max, soft horse brush with sufficient back-bone I can purchase?
First I thought trying a travel size 50/50 Vie-Long 13120B but I better ask you before I buy to prevent mistakes.
What do you think folks?

Horse hair ain't going to get you what you want,,, stick with badger low loft. If your boa s splaying out too much for you horse won't be any better,, Tc

Actually result is good or bad I will get one horse brush anyway for the sake of variety, and more or less I will use it, so why not the best one for me among them?
Who knows I might be a hardcore horse fanatic in the future.

Well because your not wanting anything that splays too much ,, that leaves horse hair out if the equation,, you already said you don't get that much with your thater, that should tell you that a low loft badger s what your wanting, horse just isn't type of hair that will hold up without splaying all over the place. Every horse ive ever bought wound up being a keyboard cleaning brush or for cleaning small parts when im working on my Harley. Tc

I have a Vie Long 12750 horse hair brush and I like it very much. Works up a lather in no time...just enough backbone and softness. Just a warning...during the break in phase it will smell like the south end of a north bound horse. That does wear off after a while. The butterscotch handle is an added bonus...looks great on my shelf.

I face lather and only have one horse hair brush for a reason. I like to use circular strokes to work up a lather and painting strokes to spread it. I like good back backbone and soft tips. The horse hair brush I have fails on two counts. If I try to use circular strokes to build a lather it is just too prickly and does not have the backbone I like. It works but I am stuck using painting strokes only. Probably a decent brush if you bowl lather imo.

Another brush to try is an Omega 10066 boar brush. They are different from the Semouge boar brushs.

The Vie-Long Epsilon horse-hair brushes are, probably, the best ones you'll find. However, you will still find that they splay too much.
As has been mentioned, try a good 2-Band badger brush with a lower loft. There are so many to choose from and you can even order a separate knot and have an artisan turn you a custom handle and have them set the knot to your specifications.

If you're looking for that type of brush, good backbone and silky on the face, I'd recommend a Plisson High Mountain White size 10.

In my opinion, of the many brushes I've tried, the Plisson is in a league of it's own - stellar backbone, and like silk on the face, one of the few brushes that never leaves my bathroom counter.

And the Vie-Long Horse hair brush, I've tried one, and as mentioned, won't be what you're looking for at all IMO.

I have a Epsilon White Horse Hair brush and like it. It is definitely different than a badger but if you are looking for change of pace then you can't go wrong.

You will want to bowl lather with the brush and may find it has a wet horse smell when it first gets wet. Lather the brush several times and this goes away.
