Thanked: 72Between This Kent and This Simpson, Which Brush Would You Choose?
I've been eyeballing two brushes for a few months now and I'm at a stalemate as to which one I like better, this Kent Silvertip or this Simpson Chubby 3. The Simpson is huge and classic, but the Kent is elegant and there's something appealing about the Kent brand to me. Would love a little input from the crowd on this!
Now, if your answer is "Well, I'd rather have a Morris" or "I'd rather have a whatever," stop yourself and reread the question. Thanks!!

I vote for the Simpson. But that only from looks. I've never used ether brush. Good luck!

I have and use a Simpsons Chubby 2 and a Kent Bk 8. Both are very nice brushes.
The Chubby does tend to be a lather hog--it tends to use more cream or soap because the dense knot holds more product in it. It has great backbone and isn't scritchy (mines a super) and it's well suited for face lathering but also works well in a wider, low-rim bowl.
The Kent is really well-suited to soft creams but also does well with harder creams and standard soaps. Some say the brush is a little floppy, and that's true to a point--it definitely doesn't have the backbone of a Chubby but it also doesn't fall over when wet and loaded. The tips are very soft with a lot of cushion so this feeling it imparts may be why it feels floppy to some...sort of like a feather pillow.
Both brush handles are not exactly comfortable (I have large hands) but neither handle is a total deal breaker either...it's just that other brushes in my rotation beat these brushes in this department.
If you bowl lather and use creams the most, the Kent would be my 1st recommendation. If you face lather mostly with soaps and don't mind using a lot more product, then the Chubby would be what I'd suggest (though Simpsons make other fine brushes that have better flow through without using as much product, for example their Persian Jar 3 is a great brush both for bowl and face lathering and has a very comfortable handle).
Hope this helps--happy shopping!

Chubby 2's and 3's are my all-time favorite go-to brushes, I own or have owned over a dozen - in super badger, 2-band, and Manchurian badger. They are a great compromise between firmness for face-lathering, and softness. Provided you load them properly, they will lather like a machine.
I have owned a handful of modern Kents, but none at present. Although undoubtedly very well made using good materials, they have all been just too floppy for my liking. Definitely not in the same league as Simpson Chubbies performance-wise."Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." -H. L. I'm not familiar with that specific kent but in general kents tend to be on the floppy side. The Chubby 3 is a very large brush and though very nice you need to be careful or it can eat a huge amount of soap and can really devour creams too easily. Personally I'd get a Chubby 2 for an all purpose brush. Of course if you like floppy the kent is the one to get.

Gentlemen,
I am with Spendur on this one.
The Kent is a lovely brush but too floppy. Also, I don't particularly care for the handle. The Chubby 3 is a big brush. I have had it in super badger, and Chubby 2 in super, as well, but my vote goes for Chubby 2 super badger, which is more manageable.
I would suggest going with the Chubby 2 in super badger, especially if you face lather.

Thanked: 351I have a Kent BK4 and it's pretty soft, but then, I like softer brushes. That said, if I had to choose between a Kent and a Simpson Chubby, I'd go for the Chubby, but I would make it a 2 as someone else mentioned. A 3 is nice, but it's a big knot.
I prefer longer handles myself.... a Colonel or perhaps even a Polo from Simpson suits my tastes (the Colonel being my absolute favourite brush), but it's a personal thing.
Chubby for the win.

Thanked: 4826I do not have either brush, I do however go on Simpsons web page and look at brushes a few times a year. I have never looked at Kent brushes. I have no idea what the lure is for a Simpson, but if I could have a Simpson knot in a HarryWally or B52 handle I would already have one. I am not a big fan of simpson handles but I want a knot, and may have to put up with on of their handles to get one.
