Thread: Scuttle with a warm water reservoir

I'm a scuttle butt too. I fill it with hot water before my daily routine. When I'm ready to shave that water is what I use to soak my brush. I fill it again with
hot water and my lather stays nice and warm for a right hand shave and again for a left hand shave. This is a "Moonstar Pottery" product, I use it daily.

Hello all, I am going to buy a scuttle and have been looking at several from new to vintage. I have noticed that most, if not all, the vintage scuttles have three or more holes in the bowl. What am I missing here? Why are there holes in the bottom of the bowl? Does this not make it hard to keep your lather? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

My understanding is the top dish, with holes, on old scuttles is for the soap. Excess water from lathering would run down the holes into the reservoir below.

I had wondered if it had been intended for cake soap... So you wouldn't fill the bottom with hot water like today's scuttles? I wonder if you could still use it with a non-cake soap? I found a vintage one that I would like to pick up but it has the holes hence the question.

The bottom of the vintage scuttles would be filled with water for the brush to soak in.

The old scuttles were made for an era when folks didn't have hot water right at hand like today. Today's scuttles are really made to keep the brush warm period. The old ones were used with brush and soap.

+1 to the above, mine is on it's way from Germany as we speak, not cheap but this is what is used in the video by Chimensh, an absolute monster with a wide mpouth for the brush.

As I recall shipping is around 18 euros to the U.S. Not bad really. I've seen vendors in Europe who charge 4x that much to ship a few items.

If I ever broke my Schwarzweisskeramik, I'd buy another one the same day. It's one of the best components of my shave and the XL give you lots of room to play.
