Thread: Simpson Polo 8 cracked handle

Simpson Polo 8.... 4-5 years old.....just saw this crack....it has NEVAH hit the floor...figured I'd post it here for ....to see if its happened to anyone....the mods can move this post,if it's in the wrong place. Thanks

is there little hands in the house? or do you use a scuttle? now the vertical crack/split looks a lot like a seam, very clean, but if it truly hasn't been dropped(by others that aren't telling you) that's surely strange Tc

No little kids left.....I do use a scuttle....I do soak my brush in warm water...the whole knot is under water....I shave every other day or every 3 days....I store the brush up side down on a wall mounted brush holder.....my 200.00 brush was well taken care of.

The knot is still snug ...no play.

About the only way something like that could happen is if it's subjected to heat and the base of the knot expanded. Otherwise it received some kind of trauma.

Of course if Mr Holmes was here he would say that chip in the scuttle was involved in the mystery.

With that much of a gap in the vertical split and the knot is still snug the knot must have swelled over time to cause the cracking.

If you like the knot have it removed and installed in a new handle. I am sure someone can make you a copy of the Polo handle to put the knot in.

If you have to soak a brush before lathering with it you might want to consider only letting the tip of the knot soak. Personally, I do not soak any of my brushes but just do a quick swish of the tips in water, shake and load the brush with soap. So far, touch wood, no problems.

Same as BobH, I have had a couple new and older brushes split the ferrule by soaking in over-hot water. I also had a favorite Omega of years that spit out its knot from the hot water soak.
Some swelling will occur and that was figured in by the makers, A special knot in a expensive handle may have been placed into a metal cup, or tube which can take a lot of swelling. The thickens of the ferrule around the knot and its material can make a big difference. A re-knotted handle may have more swelling than the original smaller knot caused. So there is less material hoop strength of the thinner material to contain the pressure.

Warm water in the scuttle for the brush...as iam aware of hot water might damage the hairs....and hot tap water for the inner walls of the scuttle......Just didn't expect this from a high end brush ( high end for me ).

Sorry to see that, Bruv. I am of the opinion it is a result of too much hot water too many times.
Either the knot was swollen, the handle shrunk...Or both?


I am like Bob above. I dip into the water a bit at a time. Never soak. If I do, it is 4 or 5 MM at most and not very long. I like the hair shafts dry and with character. Soaking makes mine floppy.

Hate to see that. Maybe that you can get that knot into a new handle?
