Exactly. There is a wide range of badger knot grades with different characteristics and at various price points. Add to that one person's nice feeling and effective could be another's scratchy and lather hog. You have to be much more specific in your request in order to get what you want and even then it could be a crap shoot. Most people wind up buying several badger brushes till they find what they are looking for.

There is a brush primer in the forum's Library which might be worthwhile reading.

Thater 4125 Bulb two band silvertip in whatever size you prefer it is available in 0, 1, 2, 3 ,and 4. I have a 4 which is a 30mm knot and I am in love with it. Honestly, I agree with an article and review in Straight Razor Magazine. I believe the Thater 4125 is the finest brush available today. You can of course pay a lot more, but you will not get a better brush!

I've never tried that brush. Thater Silvertips, both 3 and 2 bands, are among the best in the game.

For around that budget I would recommend a Stirling Finest shave brush.

Looks like a low-budget pure badger. Personally, I would not recommend a pure badger unless you want to bowl lather. In that price range, perhaps a Maggard's two band. For that price, I've also been eyeing this two-band from Classic Shaving, but I really can't justify another brush for myself.

Ah ha.....well thanks for the advice. I might just hold out for the Thater suggested above, the Silvertip.

The Thater 4125/2 silvertip bulb is my only brush and works superbly for face or bowl lathering. Somehow, I managed to score a 20% off deal back in 2012. I would definitely buy another Thater brush based on this one's performance.

I’ll insert my .02. I avoided the brush compulsion for over a year. When I finally caved, I bought a 3 sterling’s(boar, badger, syn), 2 Simpson’s(case, duke 3 both best) and a sumogue 1305. For me the 2 I reach for the most is the 1305 and the stirling badger. Honestly I say start there. Save the money for razors and stones!
    Enjoy the day,
    Benson
