That is an awesome shelf!
I really am super jealous of all you guys out there with enough room to do all this stuff.
I like that. Looks a lot easier to make than what I was thinking of. A little routing to round the front edge, mark out the hole centers and chuck a Forstner bit in the drill press. No scroll saw work needed. I do not think having them sit on the tang like that would cause any problems. The steel is not going to bend under the minuscule weight of the razor. Only thing I would worry about is having one open when it gets removed, gravity pulling the blade open, but that would not be that big of a deal. don’t put your finger on the trigger, don’t grab a razor by the blade.
Man, I am so jealous of your set up. I want to come over and shave at your house. I was looking up Trumpers Barbershop in London today and read a review on how they treat their customers. Made me wish I would have made the trip when I was in Germany. All that to say, your shave den would be the perfect proxy for the english mecca of shaving. I love it. Outstanding job. :tu
The holes were easy to mark and drill. I made a mark on the wood every 1 inch and used a 7/8 forstner bit to drill the holes. I have had no issues with the blades sitting on the tang and have a shallow hole drilled for each to set in. I have all my blades pretty tight in the scales so have no issues with them coming open on their own. This one is a 38 hole unit. I have a 12 hole unit over my sink that I made out of Missouri Cedar which came from a tree on my own place.
There we go, getting some more Stuff on this thread....
those look great BJ :tu thanks for posting!!!!!
OOOO, AAAAH. Very nice work!
John
I love the display cabinets.
Mine are sitting out on a shelf and I have to slather with mineral oil each time.
I lucked out. At the Ohio get together I was lucky enough to win a display case. A gorgeous TI case from Classicshaving. Add in some fancy wood scaled razors (7 blades in transit, I cut my own scales in the wood shop) and I am on my way.
This is in my current bathroom....I will be moving into a new house (hopefully sooner than later) and will be gutting and customizing the bath there to suite my tastes. In the meantime, here at home the only shave equipment I have on display are two "shadow box" type of things that my (soon to be ex) wife made for me about 10 years ago. Once I get moved I'll open them up to confirm date codes, etc., so for now I'm not 100% sure about whats inside them.

First shot is the shave soaps/creams/brushes/bowls that I have left out to use until I move (stay away from my Bushmills!)....
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...Picture061.jpg
The second shot is one of two identical razor "shelves" that I built after Xmas. They will be painted solid white before being hung up at the new place and each one holds 48 razors. The ones seen here are my regular rotation.....I think I have enough in my collection to fill 4 of these however....lol...

Thanks for posting Eric, those look great, I cant wait to see what you're going to do once you get moved!!!!!
I'm looking forward to it.....put a bid in on a 1940's house today....still has all the original trim and tile work. If it works out it will be a really nice place when I'm done. I'll keep you posted!
Some neat stuff there man! Glad to hear you picked out a house. Good luck on that bid!
Is the bushmills to relax yourself pre-shave, or to celebrate a successful shave?
The wife has been complaining about my measly 4 razors and a couple soaps and my strops. Come on, I had my razors sitting on top of the Q-tip container and the soap dishes on top of the toilet, maybe one square foot of space. Everything else is hers. So I went to bed bath and beyond the end of last week and got a wall cabinet for the bathroom
Normally, I despise these put together cabinets, they are cheep, and usually look it. This one was not bad. I take out some extra insurance buy putting some gorilla glue on the dowels and a drop on each part that mates against another. Once the cheesy little cams are locked down tight the glue foams to fill any cracks in the joint and makes it rock solid. I hung it above a towel rack and anchored it to the studs. You could hang from it and it is not going to come down. My razors are simply sitting in a coffee cup in the lower open space along with my soaps. The frosted cabinet space is relatively open for future expansion.
While I was there looking for this, I stumbled across a two sided wall hanger in chrome steel with some nice penny sized caps on the hooks. Perfect for keeping a strop from sliding off. So I grabbed it as well. I hung it behind the bathroom door and put both screws into a stud, again you are not going to pull it down. I hung my shell horse hide strop (still my fave) and my two homemade 3 inch strops on it.
It worked out pretty good if I say so myself. Best part, the cabinet was on sale. The entire kit cost me less than $50.
Thats nice.....I know I have something along those lines in my near future as well....:tu

Thanks for posting the pics Doc,,, Looking good Brother
My latest addition. TI display case in elm burl, very nice. Hung it in the bedroom.
Just got the case and filled it up already. Looks good Dave.
Don't forget that you share that bedroom with you wife and not those razors. :)
She actually likes them. She likes the wood handles I make. I finished this beauty last night.
Went to Wal-Mart this afternoon and picked up a couple of the anchor hocking sugar bowls, price here is about 2.97.
Wow Glen thanks for starting this tremendous thread with the pictures of your fine work. We are house hunting and once successful I am now inspired by all the great ideas here :bow to make my own custom rackks to match my new bathroom, whatever it may be.
Cannonfodder / Dave that a an absolutely beautiful display you have going there...
Thanks for posting...
BTW I am drinking a really good Peruvian coffee blend this morning as I write this hehehe.....
And Icedog / Matt we will hold ya to that, we want pics of your shave den when ya get it put together....
Sounds good. I had a few cups of one of the best Brazils I have ever had. Pedra Preta #3 Brazil COE (cup of excellence) winner. I managed to get 10 pounds in the green and have been savoring it but my reserve stash is coming to an end. This was hard to come by, a small microlot. I had seen it going for around $50 a half pound roasted, and it was worth it.

This is the first time that the Coop has been a registered COE participant. We were teamed up with others to capture these lots. For these COE coffees, I'm going to defer to the descriptions of the 22 professional cuppers who comprised the jury at this competition. I personally cupped all 29 samples and this one was on my top 5 list. During the competition, the coffees were cupped a minimum of 5 times and the descriptions were agreed upon by up to 25 cuppers.
This coffee is Yellow Bourbon, pulped-natural-processed, and arrives to us in vacuum-sealed, foil bags to preserve its freshness. We have 100 lbs of this coffee. Curly has agreed to distribute this coffee as a Midwest Offering.
Jury Descriptions: perfectly balanced, strong body, complete, aroma matches the taste, long finish, velvety smooth mouthfeel, intense acidity with structure and spine, intense aroma, dark chocolate, sweet caramel, vanilla, plum, dried fruits, melon, jasmine-like floral, fruity, orange, buttery, lemon rose finish, elegant!!

The brush in between the two safety razors was a flea market find, it has a swastika marking. The three brushes on the right are from left: no-name silvertip, Ever Ready pure badger, and one that has been used so much the name is worn off. It is the one I used back in the 80's when I first started shaving. The safety razor on the right is a Gillette Diplomat in very good condition.

My old shaving mirror, the box servess as storage for spare DE blades.
Dad bought this from an old guy back in the early 70's for 5.00. The old man told Dad that it had belonged to his Great Grandfather.
This is straightrazorplace allright, but then again....you guys need a brush don't you...

I finally found a name on this brush, after looking with my jewelers loupe,
it was made for B. Altman & Co. It is a Best Badger. Dad said he got it in the late 60's and it was used then.
Peter! You have a lot of really nice brushes in there! Have you used them all?
For a second, I thought it was worse...the mirror threw me off. :)
You mean to tell me you have 160 brushes sitting around?! WOW!
Ever be willing to part with a badger-hair? :D
WOW !!!!
Thanks for posting the pics guys!!!!
We are really seeing some great stuff out there...
I can't believe all those brushes:y
Some great ideas are showing up on here!!!!
Wow, I have gotten some great ideas for future projects.
