The drawback is that the water also takes a long while to get out of the clay after use, and it will leave whatever lime or other solvable and minute ingredients (and soap) is in it - in the pores. There it will build up eventually and look, well, unsavoury, to say the least.
Get stoneware, that is unporous even without a glaze. Or take this to your local potter who makes earthenware, and have him line the inner pot with a glaze and fire it (but this solution is not quite safe because the firing temperature would have to be the same as the one used for the original glaze). Or take it to your local potter and have him make you a stoneware copy. Stoneware lasts thousands of years - this won't.

Ummm, it's soap. What difference would it make if there is soap residue in the clay? I never clean out my lather bowl. I don't see the point of anyone doing so unless they also use a new bar of soap every time they bathe.

I was only speaking for myself. This is a question of personal preference, and hygiene and unglazed porous surfaces just do not go together for me personally. Anyone with a different taste is welcome to use what they want. It probably won't kill.

I think this is a great design with a minor problem of the porus inner pot which can be in my mind atleast corrected with a product used to waterproof terracotta pots for use as a fish pond. http://thaibondall.com/pondtiteuse_eng.php though I have not done this myself.

You will probably have some left over to make a nice little pot pond or water garden for your family or coat a few pots and sell them here....

There's a Lowe's right by the draw bridge in brooklyn under the BQE. It's not too far from the home depot and jetro.

im worried that the porous sides (which I'm imagining like a fine-grained pumus rock) will eat away at your brush bristles because it isn't smooth glaze.

    is that possible?

The idea is still fantastic. I am taking the one I picked up at Wally World last night and slapping some type of glaze I will pick up at Hobby Lobby to take care of the porous inner pot and the texture in one swoop. For today's shave, I used my trusty boar brush and some of Jockeys's Lime soap (outstanding by the way!!) and the combo worked superbly.

BTW doesn't Oskar make scuttles? Maybe it's a different Oskar.

Anyway, I say glaze the inside and you've got some earthly perfection!

An alternative some may find useful:

After reading this post, and others concerning scuttles, I was intrigued and realized that I might have had a solution right in front of my face.
I had to buy a hot pot (electric tea kettle with the large open top) simply because my tap water doesn't get hot enough to make a nice cream.
Anyway, after reading this post, I tried using it to keep the lather warm. After making a lather in my regular old mug, I poured out enough water from the kettle so the water wouldn't run over the brim, then submerged the mug in the hot water.
It worked great, and I'll keep using this since I am very attached to my mug.
