Anyone know of a good storage solution? I know Dovo makes a box for a seven day set. Just wondering if there is anything else out there.

I know of at least one member here who makes boxes http://www.chrisgiraffe.com/
i have to second this. chris makes lovely boxes. and if you want something specific he'll probably make it for you. i'm not aware of any other maker (except the dovo and ti which seem quite expensive)
I use a Gerstner wood chest to keep my razors in.
I read another thread that recommended using a cigar box from a local smoke shop.
So...
I went down to a cigar shop in a mall nearby and asked if they had any empty cigar boxes. The proprietor said yes, and directed me to a stack of all kinds of boxes. He told me that the cardboard ones were free and the wooden ones were half price off of the marked sale sticker.
I purchased the most expensive one, which was labeled at $15.00 and walked out of the store with it for a little over $8! (sales tax - gotta pay the governor!)
These boxes are better made than the box my wife keeps her jewelry in! Closing latches and hinged, plus they smell good on the inside.
Now just line it with some velvet and it is as good as gold.
Now if I only was good at woodworking/refinishing.
here are some pics...

What? You don't have a tang and butt holder? hehehehe(snicker) :w
you might want to consider on of old blades new boxes! they are inexpensive and a lot of fun!
Yummy, Doc! :tu

Lots of good options! What excellent timing, I just got my nice little Swedish blade from Ivo and was wondering about a box. The thread where oldblades introduces his boxes is http://straightrazorpalace.com/showthread.php?t=16852
(and he includes tang and butt holders, heh heh heh :D )
And one more thing I just found, for travel-- a leather one-razor case by Dovo from Classic Razors

Slick, no?

I've also heard that Tony M might be in the works of producing a prototype barbers box which he will use to gander if its worthwhile.
Question:
If you guys could design your dream box, what would it look like? I may be able to come up with something for a very fair price. It might take a little while, considering how CRAZY BUSY I am with work/school/wife & baby/moving into new house. :)
EDIT: I just noticed Chady's post above...sorry! Not trying to take anything away from Tony. I'm sure he could come up with a better box anyway! ;)
@ cwrighta70
It was just something TM mentioned over on B&B in a similar post I had made. He said it would be somewhat like what barbers used in times past. But it was a prototype they were working on to see if it would be feasible from a commercial standpoint. So might not at all come into play.
I don't think he or anyone else wants less handcrafted products out there on the market, I know I don't.
So please don't, abstain from trying or at least contemplating because of that.
Your design might be what people want.
So if, with time, you make a box at one point please share pictures :). Most people here I suspect have use for more than 1 box anyway.
I just wanted to add that barbers boxes seem to be ones where the razors are stored vertically. Which the window display people might not want, thats the only design I've found for them sofar anyhoo.
My dream box (actually a display case) would have the following features:
Hang on the wall,
Have a tempered glass or plexiglas front for display,
Have a lock to keep curious hands / fingers away from the razors,
Display my razors on pegs with razors open to show off the blades,
Have a hidden compartment that is open to hold dessicant,
Play "Hail to the Chief" every time I open the door to select a new razor to use:D
My dream box has nothing to do with straight razors!
...Ok, I'll bring this over to "off topic"....

Well I went to some local stores yesterday and priced supplies for making a nice razor box. So far, I'm thinking the box will be made of cedar wood. The inside will be lined with either velvet, silk or satin (I thought about leather for a moment, but not too sure about that one). Built-in antique lock comes standard :)
Any other ideas, guys?
Well, I know I prefer dark wood, but (correct me if I'm wrong as I know almost squat about wood-stuff) you can get some sort of material which is applied to the wood to make it darker.
Other than that, the spacers should preferably be able to hold 7 razors from 5/8 to 8/8.
Actually I don't even know for sure what colour cedar is, I've seen some stuff on google just now. And I'm not sure if its because of some treatment it gets later or because theres some very different types of that wood =)
There will definitely be room for 7 razors.
As far as the color of the wood, sure there are a number of things you can do including staining. I could also use oak/red oak instead of cedar?
I know I've always been partial to darker woods like walnut, but use what is feasible for you in prototyping and then maybe offer a variety.
I like the leather lining idea, any reason you decided against it?
Somewhat personal preference, and I'm not sure what real leather costs yet. I found a faux-leather, but definitely did not like the way it felt.
I love the idea of leather, especially red leather.
I'll be finishing a "model" of the razor box tonight (just made one out of cardboard so I could get the correct size and spaces for razors established). I have most of the pieces I need. I decided on red oak wood w/ red velvet lining for this first round. It will also feature a half-mortise lock and possibly a mirror under the lid.
Hey gatorfan, instead of hail to the chief, why not marilyn monroe singing happy birthday mr presdent.:)
I bought a narrow shelf that comes with a raised lip all-round from The Container Store. It mounts without visible support onto your wall. I used the basket weave non-slip material drawer liner material to space the razors off the bottom a bit.
They now line-up diagonally in my bathroom.
:OT , but one of the guys in our neighborhood hardware store used to say, "something for the Governor's defense fund."
Of course, I live in Illinois, where that's pretty damn close to the truth--our last governor in jail and our current one looking over his shoulder if he's got any sense at all.
That aside, I like your cigar-box idea and will keep it in mind if I get some spare time this summer.
Sorry it's taking me a little longer to build this box than I'd hoped. On top being a crazy birthday month (my wife's, baby's, and my birthdays are all within the same week!) and paying TONS of bills and medical expenses (my baby had RSV :() it's been a long month.
I have the wood cut and stained. Next comes the assembly. I will post some pictures soon of the progress.
My apologies to GAZBAG100...I know you're waiting to see some pics. :)
any idea what the price will be? Sounds like a really nice box.
Well, like I told GAZBAG100, it will be considerably less than the Dovo/TI versions, but I am still unsure what a fair price is. I want to be able to cover my expenses on this, but I also want to offer you guys a great deal. I've not been around in this hobby long enough to know what a good, fair price is.
I'm patiently awaiting the pictures as well for reasons you already know.
Well except for the patient part =P
I have no idea what RSV is short for but if thats yours in the avatar then at least he? looks happy.
Ps. grats on the birthdays
she* (no biggie :)) is completely better now. THIS is RSV. It CAN be deadly to a baby, especially those 6 months and younger. Luckily, ours is turning 1 tomorrow :)
And, Chady...I have remembered your requests. ;)
I may be in on this box of yours.
It sounds awesome, I really would like something with a velvet interior!
I'm still waiting patiently CW :w
I've never really frequented this forum but due to the spamming that I saw and reported I wandered in here and have been unable to leave. Just what I need... another sub-forum to keep my eyes on... Great!
That said, I have taken a not so great picture of how I've got a few of my razors displayed:

- Picture taken with iPhone.
My wife found this box for me when she noticed my growing collection of razors. It was her father's box and he used it for displaying golf ball markers. According to my wife, it was purchased from a Bombay Company store - listed as a fountain pen display box. Unfortunately, Bombay Company has ceased operations in the US. They are however still operating in Canada, but someone has already checked to see if they still carry these cases, and he was told that they did not have them in stock and they don't take orders for items. Oh well.
I've looked at fountain pen display cases on eBay and there are quite a few that I think would work just as well (but of course, not be as pretty as the one my wife gave me...) :)
The fountain pen box idea is a good one - they seem to sit fairly well in yours Byron. Here is one for sale in UK eBay for about $25 that is similar.

It doesn't look like he ships to the USA - but probably would. If anyone likes the look of it and wanted it shipped I am happy to help out. You prob have similar at as good a price in the states.
cheers
Stephen
jeesh... why would someone want to collect pens anywho
;P jk if anyone here does
