Thanked: 7I couldn't wait. If everything doesn't fit, I guess I get to make another one. I used spalted Tamarind, and a superglue, and wax finish. Its pretty light. I was thinking about seeing how it feel when the brush gets here, and maybe drilling a hole under the brush, and melting some lead into the bottom of the handle to add a little heft. I'm too cheap to buy a good brush, so I guess I'm lucky I have the ability to hopefully make my own.

Thanked: 7I'm done. This is definitely a step up from the $5 drug store brush I have been using.

I have been looking at the knots for a week or so. Hard to believe the price. I ordered a 24mm silver tip badger hair knot. I'm putting together a shave kit for my son-in-law and I really didn't want to spend $100 for a silver tip brush. Ill make one. The brush I use is bigger than I might like so I got a smallish knot and I hope its a good size for him. Now to decide on handle material...

What have you found with regard to using JB Weld to seat the knot? It seems to me that maybe there is something better, especially for wood. Any comments on the subject? Should the knot seat tightly in the handle?

worked very well for me, no complaints, and i've made two of 'em thus far. dewey has the third handle and will no doubt be using the same thing.
i don't doubt that there are better adhesives, but this was the most appropriate one i had in my tool box at the time. a two-part adhesive was necessary, because there isn't air or uv down in the crevices of the brush to cure a single part compound.
as to how tightly the knot should fit, my knot was 28 mm and the closest forstner bit I could dig up was 1-1/8", which is about 25/1000 inch too big, so there was a tiny bit of slop. this actually worked in my favor, as i did not seal the inside of the bore, so the jb weld squished up the sides of the hole and sealed it once the knot was pushed in.Last edited by jockeys; 05-16-2008 at 02:01 PM.
