I tried the first, but found that the lather would tend to dry up.

Now I use a small scuttle and I like it, since the brush is nestled nicely in it, with a larger surface in contact with the walls of the scuttle making for good heat transfer. I can use a Chubby 1 up to a 28mm knot brush with my small moss just fine.
Most thoughtful, thanks. I usually start with facelathering to move the whiskers a little, but would like to have warm lather ready for the subsequent passes. I didnt think the lather would start drying. Do you use very hot water or shave very slowly, or is that just the way it is? Perhaps this could be avoided by making the lather slightly thinner to begin with? My biggest brush is 28 mm and I dont need anything larger, so perhaps I should get a GP (I liked what I saw on the site linked above)? But then again, is having a scuttle that's a little larger than what it needs to be a problem?

Just regular hot tap water. I found that if I transfered all my lather (if I used cream) into the scuttle, it would start to dry. The longer the shave, the drier. Not really a big deal, I just used to add a bit of water to my brush. On average I take 10-15 mins with a DE or 15-20 mins with a straight for 4 passes and 3 passes, respectively. All depends on whether it is a weekday or weekend.

Now, if I use cream, I just use a lather bowl (mine's really just a glorified cereal bowl), and after lathering up my face, I load up the brush from the bowl, and set the loaded brush in the scuttle for my next pass.

Here is a good comparative review.

I think I have to rename my S-scuttle. It is S (small) only when compared to the L-scuttle. Compared to other scuttles on the market it is stilll BIG (that is not the only difference).
For making lather with a big brush I usually recommend the L or LK-version which offers slightly more space for the lather.
As for size: A bowl that is big enough for lather production can be used like a small bowl, not vice versa.

I ended up making my own. I guess I use scuttles differently (or incorrectly??) and couldn't find a home-based scuttle maker that would enlarge the dimensions a little around the spout to hold a brush. After asking several makers I just bought clay and did it.
