I used cup within a cup, Old school scuttles, cup warmers....I finally settled on the GEORGETOWN POTTERRY SCUTTLE ver4...the newest/final iteration of their scuttle. I had one or two of each version cept #1.

This keeps my lather warm for the length of my shower/shave.
I'm pleased with it. Bought one for my Son. He was tickled with it and his brushes and straights.

I asked Lori to paint my two cats..I now have three...cats not scuttles

I've not been exposed to the DIRTY BIRD. I always hear glowing reviews of it..
The others were too big for my desire..footprints are huge on some of the other front runner scuttles.

ps my technique is to sit the scuttle in a sink of hot water and fill it up with hot water running. Let the scuttle and brush soak for a few minutes (transfer the heat into the pottery). Take the scuttle with hot water in the water chamber and lather area. Sit it on my tub while I take a shower. When ready to shave I put my thumb over the water fill and empty the lather area of water. Squeeze water from my brush. LOAD it up, lather away.
I was having trouble with getting a good lather from QED Sandalwood/Vetiver. I have mastered that so I have several passes of warm lather ready for me.

I've got a Georgetown scuttle. I can only assume it is version 4 as I just received it 2 weeks ago, the web site says nothing about version. It's a pretty piece, and it does an OK job of keeping lather warm if I pre warm it and use tap water (my tap water is pretty hot), it works best when I pre warm it and use water from a elec. kettle. I measured, It only holds 6 oz of water, holding more probably would allow it to stay hotter longer. I don't own any other scuttles, but think most of them have smaller cup than the georgetown. I don't keep my soap in the scuttle, but I do lather in it, so the larger cup is a benefit fopr me.

Overall, would I order again, NO, not unless they could get it to hold at least 10-12oz of water vs. the current 6 oz.

I have a georgetown version 3 I guess. Why did I buy it? I don't know. Its looks beautiful sitting on my shave counter gathering dust.

I found it simply didn't keep the lather warm the entire shave and as a lazy person I really didn't like having to go to the kitchen and boil water to fill it. I've always face lathered and still do and personally I think that's the best way. This whole warm lather thing has always been a mystery to me. Its like a dog chasing his tail. if I want warm lather I give the brush a shot of hot water and I have warm lather. it couldn't be easier.

I used 2 mugs but broke one. Now I use a dip chiller which is a large bowl for ice (hot water) and a small bowl that fits inside for the dip (lather). I think I paid $12 or so for it.

Speaking of using 2 bowls, I've noticed there are scuttles made of one piece and some made of 2. I'd think with the inner bowl being able to come out it would clean easier, but most seem to prefer the one piece. Any comments?

Also, Dirty Bird makes a scuttle with a separate lather bowl. I guess that would be used to keep the lather from breaking down while you keep the brush warm in the scuttle while shaving. Any comments on this would also be appreciated.

I had a local potter make one for me, and she's gone on to make others as well. She can be found by searching PeachScuttle if you like. Seems like since she's not a volume supplier you don't see much of her work as opposed to the GP, DB, Moss, etc.

I prefer mine because it's a two-piece, which allows me to have a lather bowl, then incorporate it into the larger portion to keep the lather warm after I've mixed it up. It's also nice to say that I had a say in how it was made (size, volume, color, etc), so it is truly MY scuttle.
