Just bought this scuttle with a long name i cant pronounce
I saw this deal on the classifieds and just couldnt pass it up. I had the amazon.com dip chiller but i have a few issues with that one. Anyways im stoked about it, the lip on the end looks big enough that i can rest my shavemac in it.

I was curious if anyone else had one of these, or something similar. Sometimes when i have the time i will boil water in a kettle and use it to keep my lather warm. Im just worried that it could cause problems and make the scuttle crack or something. Never really used one before so im not sure how much i should fill it up.
Also, ive been wanting something black to make lather in because i think it will give me a better perspective as to how thick or watery my lather is as im mixing it

Very nice scuttle and there are a few people here with them. I have a Dirty Bird scuttle and although I tried using it with boiling water I didn't like the results, the lather seemed to break down very quickly which made it pretty pointless. I prefer to just use hot water from the tap, but if your tap water just doesn't get that hot then I'd advise putting a little cold water in with the boiling water. I'm pretty sure the boiling water wouldn't damage the scuttle, I'm just thinking of the lather.

Thanked: 17I have one that I purchased from Sue at Mama Bear's Soaps.
You have a great scuttle at a Fantastic price!
This is copied from the Schwarzweisskeramik site
"It is recommendable to pre-warm the scuttle in the way a teapot is, i.e. by initially filling the hollow and the inner bowl with warm water (no hotter than 70°C/160°F) so that the material can store the warmth. After about 5 minutes the water is poured out and replaced by hot water. The scuttle will then keep the lather pleasantly warm throughout the shave."
Personally I preheat the scuttle and soak my brush with hot tap water while taking a shower. then refill with hot tap water and make lather.

Thanked: 1Same but all white.
Oskar is very nice.
Just be careful not to use any boiling water for it's an assembled artifact.

Thanked: 132Thats an awesome scuttle there! Definatley want one like you have, but they are a bit expensive, if ya buy them overseas.
I just recently recieved a dirtybird scuttle and although i think its ugly as hell, the pottery scuttle works really well.
Ive only used it once so far, since i only just got it, but i wrap the base of all my scuttles with a barber towel and cover the top with a folded wash cloth and ive not had any issues with cooling or drying lather. Also, i poured boiling water directly into the scuttle, with no problems at all...didnt think about it cracking. Hmm...
Peace,

The Dirty Bird isn't ugly!
I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
