Thread: Watch mugs anyone?

In the past month or so I picked up 2 Corning watch/shaving mugs from the same antique store. Story goes that they were made during WW2 up to the Korean conflict. I think I like 'em. Anyone else using these?

So the story goes. They were made by Corning glass and used by the US Navy from WW2 up to the Korean conflict. Made out of white glass 1/4" thick, 3 1/2" tall, 3 3/4" OD. Got the name "watch" mug from also being used as a coffee mug when standing watch. The handleless design allowed them to be held with both hands and helped to keep warm.

Never used one for shaving, but I prefer those mugs to all others due to having no handle. As stated above, it's a great hand warmer on a cold day, and since they don't have handles you can store a bunch of them in a small space.

Now if I could just talk my wife into accepting them. I have yet to find a "pretty" version. Most are stoneware or glass and are plain. I like it, but my wife would prefer a more decorative cup.

i cant remember where i read it though sorry
