Well despite the hole(where you will pour hot tap water or hot water from a hot pot) it retains heat very well, i always make my lather right before i hit the shower(dont ask why but i like to come out of the shower, lather up and shave, it seems to help on my beard, rather then having to make lather when you get out, ect especially if your doing Alraz the bomb lather(stuff takes a few minutes to get it in the spot) anyway getting off topic haha but is stays warm for the whole shower and 30 minutes with degrading the lather too much. Anytime after that it starts to cool down but it still is warm. I love it , however like i said before i want to get a georgetown, and a moss for variety, and to keep my SAD at bay!

The old-timey scuttles had a semi-dished area on top where you could sit a soap puck, over holes that let steam from the water below warm the puck. They also had a sort of spout through which the brush was inserted into the water. I don't believe these were used once the brush was lathered, i.e. they weren't used for keeping lather warm.
