    Default Vie-Long Horsehair Brushes

Has anyone tried one of the Vie-Long Horsehair brushes. They are lower priced than the badger brushes. The description says that the horsehair feels like badger on your face, but is stiffer in the body than badger brushes. I'm thinking of trying one, but would like to get some feedback if anyone has already tried them. Thanks for any information.

    Regards,

    Mark

    Mark,

Can't say that I have. I do like my Vie-long badger hair brush though. In fact, there was a sale on them at Bull Goose shaving just last month.

I never used one so I can't say but as far as horse hair goes they were used alot in the old days as shaving brushes and brushes to apply talc and for cleaning hair off your clothes after a haircut. I have a shoe brush that's horsehair and it's way too soft to be a shaving brush.

Thinking of where the hair comes from gives me pause. Reminds me of the guy who went into the greasy spoon diner and asked the waitress,"What's good today". She said,"The tongue is delicious."

"I wouldn't eat anything that came out of a cow's mouth," he replied. "Give me an egg."

I have been curious about these as well. I think the main benefit of these brushes is for people that are conscious of animal rights etc. I believe the hair used in these brushes comes from the tails of the horses, and that the horses are not harmed beyond the trimming of the tail.

I've also heard that they hold water better than boar, but not as well as badger.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. If I decide to try one, I'll post my opinion of it.

    Have a great day,

    Default I like mine

    Hello I have this one.

Vie-Long 13061 Horse Hair Brush -BullGoose Shaving Supplies

I must say I do like it. It works like a boar, very easy to use with hard soaps, can pick up a good amount of soap and makes a good lather. The handle also is nice on this brush, has some weight to it. The brush is made with tail and maine. The horse is not injuried in this process if that makes a difference to you.

I think its very similar to a boar brush.

Does anyone know if the Vie-Long 13061 Premium Horse Hair Shaving Brush is dyed? I just ordered one and am expecting it any day.

I've heard that, for horsehair brushes it's recommended that you 1) soak the bulb in vinegar/cold water for half an hour, 2) drain and rinse well, 3) lather and let sit for half an hour, and 4) rinse well and dry. Supposedly the vinegar/water soak sets (most of) the dye and the rest of the process removes the remaining dye and any "horsearoma". If the 13061 is it isn't dyed, I guess all of this is moot.

I used to have one. They are considered to be quality brushes, but I never liked mine. They are too small for my needs, and I didn't even like the way the hair behaves. At the end, I gave it away.
They are very different compared with the bestshave.net horsehair.
