Default Brush indecision....I'm a newb again!!!

Brushes are absolutely my weak-link. I have dozens of razors, 5 strops, hones aplenty, soaps, creams, widgets, wadgjets and whammos....but only two brushes.

One is "silvertip" of dubious pedigree in a beautiful hand-tunred handle.
The other is a midrange smallish shavemac.
I didn't realize until TODAY how unhappy I was with my selection. Weird how you can do "just fine," even becoming somewhat of an "expert" in certain areas of a field, and suddenly realize that part of your routine and knowledge is woefully inadequate.

I think I like mid-sized brushes. Firm enough for dense soap, but soft enough to comfortably work creams. Not too floppy.

The choices are overwhelming. I'm liking the Simpson Emporer II in Super badger, or the Thater 4292/4H in Finest (though the handle looks a little smaller than what I want).

I'm thinking dense, 23mm, but I am realziing that I am an absolute brush newbie! Funny how I was just about starting to consider myself quite knowledgeable in this whole game. I love that there is a new part of the hobby I can learn more about.

So, gents....what do I want? Budget of around $200. Less is fine, too!
Summary: Comfy luxury, I like it pretty dense, I like to have tons of lather, needs to handle hard soaps as well as creams.

Oh, and I think I might be a little tough on brushes, so if one has a reputation for standing up to a littl emanhandling, that would be a plus.

    Thank you tons gents!!

    Good question!

I only have one brush, a Trumpers Best Badger, so I'm not really qualified to give any advice on this one..!

I've heard good things about the Thater brushes though, and they sound like they'd be in your budget so check those ones out.

Let us know what you decide to go for..!

Dude you are in for some work here. It so happens that there is a sale at Vintage Blades but I would not dottle to long

    Vintage Blades LLC*::*Clearance & Specials*::*Shaving Brushes

The brushes at Vintage are hand checked and sold by someone that is top notch in my book. There are fantastic deals... Jump on it. These are not seconds or problem children.

My Chubby1 and 2 are monsters. I never thought I would like the 2 because it is so big but it is now one of my favorites.

    Take care,
    Richard

Thanks! That Polo size 8 looks awesome. The chubby seems nice, but that litle handle just doens't speak to me.

    I love semi-impulse upgrade-buys. Polo 8 ordered.
I think I'll love it, it seems to have everything I want, and if not...it's a good start to my SBAD!

Thanks SRP, this place is so good at separating me from my cash. That price was $50 better than anyplace else I coudl find!!!

I would look at the Rooney brushes. They are fine quality and densely packed. Also the Thaters are very nice too.

The Polo 8 two-band is an excellent choice. I have three Simpson two-bands and really like them all. The bristles are firm with soft tips and they are equally good when using soaps or creams. I think you made an excellent choice on your brush, plus Vintageblades is an excellent vendor.

I agree...If you want a big brush that can handle both creams and soaps, the Simpsons Polo 8 is just the ticket. I have one and love it.

Medium sized badgers work best for me.

I'm another member of the One Brush Club. I wish I had 30 , but every time I think to get the brush of my dreams, I find a razor that just has to be mine. I guess its just a question of weather you have the RAD or the BAD.

Alas I only have the money to support the one AD. So a Rooney Best Badger will have to do. The few brushes I have made seem to go to friends.
