If it's really rough I would be concerned with it grabbing individual hairs and yanking them out of the knot or breaking them.

I use a Japanese miso soup bowl, the inside is unfinished...with pebbles like a basket ball. It does a wonderful job. As these folks suggest, you probably wouldn't one that's too abrasive.

All the above plus the thick stone material will cool off the hot water faster.

You can just use the lid of your shave cream/soap. I used to. Then I realised I preferred face lathering.

I use a plastic type mortar like you find in food places that they serve dips and salsas in and it work great
