Mr X,
I have sensitive skin and find that the hard soaps cause irritatation more than creams. That said, I am in the habit of showering after the the shave just to be sure I've removed all traces of lather.
What I thought for years was razor irritation was in fact caused by the lather. No problems now with any off it.
As to brushes, I used a cheap boar brush for years before my wife gave me a mid-priced badger. So much better!
I've used mugs and scuttles. I prefer the scuttle but only because it's a neat and arcane gadget. The type of lather is the same.
I some of this helps.
LG Roy

Thanked: 45Talking about scuttles used for creams - I had wanted to make one just for this job and have finally managed. I experimented with all the usual bowls and mugs and jugs, and even attempted to solder a L'Occitane pewter soap dish on top of the pewter scuttle sold by Classic Shaving (Ray must be laughing at me now). Finally I drew up a plan and sent it to a potter in this tiny Nova Scotian village and she made me just what I wanted. It is really a jug with a deep bowl fixed inside it so that hot water can surround the inner bowl and keep it warm. To use it I fill both the outer reservoir and the inner bowl with hot water, and let my brush soak in it while I wash my face and prep. Then I pour it all out and refill just the outer reservoir through the spout, and use the brush to work up some lather in the heated inner bowl. Between passes the brush is stuffed into the bowl so it splays a little and makes contact with the walls around it to maximise heat transfer. The lather for second and third passes stays nice and warm.
There is a review today on http://www.shaveblog.com and it can be found for sale at:

Sara has been very helpful in making prototypes and has shipped about sixty of them so far. I should add I don't get any commission on this - just warm lather!
Regards to old SRP friends,

Thanx Chris, and if shaveblog boy likes it, it must be good! How often does he like anything!

Chris haven't seen you in awhile over here at SRP. How's the Rover holding up? I am still enamored with it, gas prices notwithstanding.

Thanked: 45The LandRover is holding up very well indeed, with no problems at all (other than the computer getting confused at start up when about -18 C and the battery wasn't giving its all). Lovely machine!

I ordered the "Moss Scuttle" about two weeks ago. I ordered a custom color, so I am having to wait...but I know it will be worth it!

Randy,
You're going to love the Moss Scuttle. I've had mine for about two weeks now and I'm addicted to having nice warm lather at the ready throughout my entire shave.
