Default what is the ideal scuttle brush?

so i know what do look for in a facelathering brush.. but i got to thinking.. what is the ideal brush for scuttle use? or does it even matter?

do you want something bulb shaped, or does density matter?

    thanks guys.

It probably depends more on the scuttle itself. If it has a narrow opening and doesn't allow much room for swirling then a big 28mm brush isn't ideal for that scuttle. It will work, just not ideally. This is a common complaint about scuttles.

I'd be more inclined to look for a scuttle that works for your brushes, not the other way around.

well.. the only scuttle i have is one of those gardening scuttles you get at the hardware store.. i was just curious if the density or bristle type mattered any.. i know my wee scot is a pain to use on anything other than my face.. also.. i don't think i ever see people using their semogue on a scuttle.. i could be wrong though.

if i ever do get a scuttle.. i'd prolly go with the smallest sized dirtybird.

Default What is the ideal scuttle brush?

    Hello, Victor:

I have an Oskar. It's a massive scuttle that can handle any size brush. I love it. I also have a Dirty Bird 1.5 on the way, and I am confident that can handle any brush, too, and that I will become fond of it.

Two previous scuttles were disappointing. One was big enough to handle a variety of brushes, but it failed to keep the lather warm after a short time. The other had a bowl far too shallow for big brushes.

The best suggestion I can make, therefore, is to get a scuttle big enough to handle any brush.

    Regards,

    Obie

Absolutely. The bigger the better if you ask me. Not only will it accomodate any size brush, Larger scuttles seem to build lather better, and hold more hot water.

There were a couple of Artisan shave creams I had trouble with. Since I got the DB Double scuttle, They work great. Ton's of lather. There's something about more area that makes a huge difference.

    thanks obie..

reading most reviews.. the dirtybird is the way to go.. also.. i enjoy the looks of the dirtybird more than any other.. i figured on going to with the smallest scuttle due to the fact i only do a single pass and use a very small brush to begin with...

as for the brush question... would it be a faux pas to take a semogue 830 to a scuttle?

    Default Scuttle brush

    Hello, Victor:

The Semogue 830 is a good brush. It will do just fine in your scuttle. Good choice.

    Regards,

    Obie

I use Thater's, Simpson's, Rooney's and some custom made brushes in my scuttles and there is quite the mixture of bulb and tulip cut on the brushes. Neither has shown any real benefit of the other. I have become fondest of the size 22 and 24 knots and longer handles with my brushes. I Don't lather in the scuttle, so so long as the scuttle can hold enough water between the walls to keep the inner bowl warm, I'm good to go. I normally leave just a little water in the inner bowl too when in use and the shape of the brush knot has not played any significant role in brush performance.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

thanks a lot lynn.. when you say you don't lather in the scuttle.. does that mean you mainly use the scuttle to warm the loaded brush and then facelather?

The chicken or the egg. Do you buy a brush and get a scuttle to fit or buy the scuttle and get the brush to fit?

I would just get a large scuttle and any brush will fit and you never have to worry about what fits. I have the Oskar in the medium size and it'a massive. If Obie has the large he can probably take a bath in it.
