Thread: Horsehair anyone ?

Some of my bristles have split over time, but by no means all of them. Maybe 30-40% split like a boar brush. Seems to me it was the thicker bristles that split...but I'm not looking at it right now.
Peace,
James

Thanked: 375I don't recall mine needing to be broken in. It's not one of my favorite brushes (to floppy maybe I should have set the knot lower) so mine doesn't get much face time. Very soft, brush though.

Thanked: 270I just looked throughout the thread to see if I had weighed in on it and I hadn't.
The horsehair brush I had was just too floppy for me and I have tried a couple of different times to like it. It's very attractive in a nice handle.
I remember Larry Andro saying that these brushes are made entirely of hair that naturally sheds from the horse's tail, so that makes it animal friendly.
When I first got it, it stunk, but soaking it in OxyClean completely got rid of the smell.

Just use it in rotation....
I have to look twice to tell mine from a boar brush by the same maker.
At first I was not sure I would like it...
You will find some brushes best for face lathering, bowl lathering,
creams, hard soap.
Like any brush and soap combo take a little time and practice to get the most out of it.
Keep it as a travel brush if you are not exactly sure you love it.

I love Horse brushes!
I have three custom made and two from bestshave.
I used to own a vie long but I gave it away because it was too small for me.

And Huge bowl lathering!

FWIW, my bestshave No. 6 is stiff as a boar brush. I rarely use it because of this. It is a go-to in the spring when I remove my beard, or if I've been several days without a shave. My No. 7 was my daily use brush for about a year. It's much softer than the No. 6 but in no way floppy. It's good in the mug or on your mug lathering. And I use it if I've missed a day or two shaving because it has good backbone to work into a couple day's growth. My new daily brush is an EJ Best Badger which is not floppy, but if it were any softer there's no way I could use it with soaps. I'd have to go to creams. So hopefully that gives a point of comparison for how soft/firm the No. 7 is.
I think there's a lot of variation from maker to maker, and maybe from horse to horse!
Oh, and it took about a week (daily shaving) to break in my 6 and 7 brushes.
