In the same boat as you. Just started a few months ago and the VDH kit was my first set. It was decent for the money and got me more interested in wanting to try different soaps/creams. So good luck cause it can get addicting.

Also that new set of theirs looks really nice. I love the handle on the bowl should make it easier to get a good lather going.

    Default Porcupine brush!!

I bought one of the Van Der Hagen brushes and mine must have been made of porcupine! I was used to using my old 1950 vintage badger brush, given to me by my Great Uncle Herman, it along with his tan crock shaving mug. Maybe I'm spoiled but I didn't expect it to shed like a dog just in from winter and feel like it was made of a porcupine quills at the same time. I think I need to soak it.. please pass the Nitric acid.

Of course all this is subjective opinion. Your brush may be different. Mine just feels.... prickly.

    Gibbs,
I've noticed the same thing with the brush actually. It sheds a few hairs per shave. But, for the money that I paid for the whole deal (11 bucks), it's worth it. I will eventually get a nicer brush, but this was a good way for me to start with the essentials. I really do like the soap, and was thrilled to find that they have the VDH soaps at Walgreens for just over a buck!

I have used the soap and brush for 6mo. and I like both. Maybe I was lucky with the brush but I like it better than my Badgers. So, I guess that as with anything else ones face must do the voting!

Default Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury, Shave Set

I just pre-ordered this from Amazon for $25. It's suppose to be available beginning tomorrow. Amazon.com: Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury, Shave Set: Beauty
When I get mine in I'll do a review.
I currently have the VDH premium set with the ceramic bowl, soap and boar brush. I think it works great as the brush is thicker.

I use the VDH delux and the bowl as my typical daily soap. I then have two of the of the brushs. The first was simillar to what gibbs describe so I decided to use it just in the shower with a bar of ivory soap on my face and upper body and it broke in nice and I still use it for that. The second one I bought came out of the box ready to go and I use that brush dailly as I like the backbone of it. I think with the brush the VDH quilty control isn't the greatest but all of them will work some just need more love to get the best out off them.

    Default VDH= Quality

I use VDH soap and brush. I like them both. Tried Williams and it went awry. I think the lather went on DRY! The VDH is good for the money, brush and soap. I have never used anything else though. The local drug store has it so I will buy it. It is what I started with 3 years ago and I am loyal. My brush is a bit stiff, but I like it to be that way, so I can really scrub the lathe into my whiskers.

I just tried the soap for the first time today and was not dissapointed, lathered nice for the money and shaved well. Was using AOS sandalwood but figured i better use something less expensive for the everyday shave and as far as lathering and shaving goes it worked great. AOS might have to wait for the weekend shaves . As far as the brush goes ive had mine for a while and i thought at first that the brush was a pain.... It dropped so many hairs i thought it wouldnt last for more than a month, but know it smells great (thanks sandalwood) and rarely losses a hair though i recently ordered a Franks silvertip from ebay to go with my cream soaps. Cant pass up a silvertip for 30 dollars, i got to try it.
