Van Der Hagen Kit
I ordered the Van Der Hagen brush, bowl and soap kit on Amazon for 11 bucks figuring it would be a good way to start. Does anyone know about this set?

Thanked: 1371I bought that set when I was getting started. I still use it from time to time.
It's decent stuff for the money, IMO.

I actually became so adept with that bowl I always use it for when I test new soaps and creams. The brush I gave away, but still pull out the soap on occasion. It was a great way to get started for little money and I would suggest it.

I use to use just the VDH/Surrey and similar kits and refills for almost 30 years, long before using a straight... or even before DE's and still using throw-away's. It was only after I started browsing this and other shaving sites that all the various acquisition disorders became so strong. The old adage 'out of site, out of mind', and then after my first Best Badger brush and some T&H or GFT soap I was hooked and didn't look back.
If your on a budget, and SWMBO would freak out for spending $$$, the VDH kit works great.

The brush works for as long as it lasts. It's just a matter if you prefer the feel of it.

Thanked: 1185Despite moving on to more "upscale" soaps and creams, my VDH Boar Brush and VDH Deluxe soap still are prominent features in my rotation. IMHO, both are very serviceable pieces of shaving gear and a great value for the money. While you're on Amazon, do yourself a favor and order up some VDH Glycerin shaving soap. This is just a remarkably slick lather that will consistently give you amazing shaves. Last I checked on amazon you could get like 20 pucks for about $25. Which equates to about a five year supply.

Thanked: 0CVS VDH Kits on Sale
The local CVS pharmacies had the VDH kits on sale for 1/2 half off due to being discontinued. Actually, it was the CVS branded VDH kits. You might check out CVS and see if any are still available. The brushes have many uses other than just shaving. This is a good deal.

Pick up some glycerin in a small bottle and add a couple three drops to the VDH soap as you lather. Really nice lather and cheap shaving!
