    Default Alton Brown's shaving mug????

    All,
I have an old Old Spice mug that I used to use with a brush and the soap that came in it. I'm looking to get back into the brush and mug. My OS mug had a thin red plastic lid that I would let sit on the wet soap until next use.

I was looking at the various mugs offered online and what I wanted was one with an integral lid.

Then I thought about AB and his little salt bowl.

Take a look and let me know what you think about using it as for shaving.

    Cheers

This looks like a very original soap container. Make sure the diameter is at least wide enough to hold you favorite soap and I don't see how it wouldn't function well enough. Perhaps a little shallow for some. The only thing with a glass wall is that the soap buildup would be visible through the wall of the 'mug'. If that's not a deterent, then I say go for it.

Good idea X about the diameter. I wonder if the chrome would hold up to water? (Though it does contain salt so I would hope it wouldn't pit and rust.) Also that handle doesn't look too strong. I have two ideas. How about a "short" (does that exist?) beer stein with a lid? If the ceramic was heavy like the old ones not like the new thin-walled steins. Or, number two and better, a coffee mug with a lid. I've seen nice ceramic "coffee" mugs with matching lids to keep the contents warm. Just did a google on "mugs with lids". This is what I was thinking. Not my cup of tea for style and color but you get the idea: http://www.merpots.co.uk/acatalog/Cr..._lid_large.jpg

or just saw this on ebay (a shaving bowl)

That e-bay job looks pretty slick and simplistic to have both set into one item. BUt also that salt container was a great idea as well.. Hope either turn out for you.

Nice idea. I'm a big AB fan - I think he'd make a good candidate for Str8 shaving. Please let us know if you go with it and how it works.

I'm an AB fan as well. I got the salt cellar today. It costs about $20 landed. It is not as described on his website. The metal is very thin. The metal is not chrome as described and pictured. The metal is cheap brushed. The lid came with a large discolored area about the size of a quarter in the center.

This is very much like so many things made in China. It has the basic form of something useful but is made of garbage by people who have no standards for what good quality means.

This item is not even good for static display. I would never count on using it for more than a day for any purpose. It's going back. The diminsions, would have made an ok soap dish though.

You might check out leesrazors.com they sell mugs made of onyx and fossilized stone with lids. Very pretty.

    Default Creative/economic soap holder ideas!

I did not like the prices of all those fancy containers listed on the different sites, I mean a lot of them look really cool, if money is no object and you plan to have only one of them. But if you plan to alternate soaps then you must get creative. In the past I used the wooden bowl that came along with a shaving soap from Crabtree and Evelyn it come with a lid and looks pretty classic and it was around ten extra dollars after the soap. But I encountered a few issues; the wood tends to hold humidity, it doesn't give you much room to make a the lather and eventually the finish start bubbling up from the bowl. So being an amateur cook I often frequent the kitchen stores and the isles at the dept. stores while the wife (soon to be ex) hunted for clothing/shoes. I found a ceramic bowl 'n lid made Inter-Design it is intended for holding the cotton balls in the bathroom but it has the ideal size for holding the shaving soap plus is deep enough to hold plenty of lather. They come in various colors and it has a chromed base. It should hold very well since it is designed to be in the bathroom I've seen them in several of those Bed, Bath and whatever .It retails for about $5/6.99, not bad! If you require a handle I also found one made out of porcelain in Target. It is intended for soup not soap but hey it has a nearly exact size to pass for a true shaving mug and it was only $4.99.. So I got two pretty decent mugs that look nice for a small fraction of the price I would have otherwise paid. Also less than the $20 for the salt holder. Sorry, guys for not posting pictures but the wife took the camera with her , that's life. Hope this helps someone.

That's disappointing Z07. I hate cheaply made stuff like that - and for $20!! Send it back. Maybe send a complaint email to his website.

In rereading this, it seems like an indictment of all things and all people in or from China. I did not mean it that way and am very sorry if I led anyone to believe that was my meaning. My meaning was that more often than not when I buy something that has for generations been made elsewhere and now is made in China that the quality is often less than traditional standards would permit. I have no doubt that the designers, buyers, and manufacturers are all equally culpable. However, the person ultimately culpable for the decline in quality is the consumer.
