Vie-Long is really the only name in horse brushes. There are some brushes from Turkey that may be horse hair(there is a lot of debate as to whether they may actually be boar), and I think that there are a few from India, but, by and large, Vie-Long is the only game in town. In terms of softness and backbone horse falls about in line with a "best" badger that hasn't been trimmed. It has a very different feel from badger or boar, when you make lather, and a lot of people (myself included) like it.
If that doesn't float your boat, a different grade of badger might. Some guys actually prefer the stiffer, scritchier feel of a pure badger to a silvertip. The suggestion of a 2 band that was made earlier should also give you a different experience. That said, if you decide that you want a second boar or silvertip, different brands, lofts, and knot sizes will make a difference, just a more subtle one than an entirely new material in most cases.

Alright Sargon,
I just picked up a pair of Vie Long brushes on the B&B for $27...one horse, one horse/boar mix...so we'll see...but I figure even if it's not what I'm looking for...it's only $27 bucks.
Thanks everyone for the input!

Thanked: 48LOL! Yeah me too
Seriously though if you are thinking to get just one more brush then just do it balls out and get a Plisson High Mountain European Badger. They have bristles that are stiffer then a normal silver and softer then a boar and are top of the line. When you have the best you will find there is no need for the rest.

The cheapest brush I ever owned is my favourite: Omega Syntex synthetic brush. I gets me better and more cinsistent lather than boar or badger.

Maybe I will wait and see if the euro goes to hell...even for a day...and go on a massive euro shopping spree!
