Thanked: 983My first homemade brush.
I made this brush using a 24mm 'Black Badger' knot from The Golden Nib, a piece of pine, my second hand lathe that I finally got around to setting up last weekend, some black stain, a little bit of two part epoxy to glue the knot in, and sealed the wood with a beeswax and boiled linseed oil mixture I used on a restoration of an old .303 Lee enfield rifle some time back.
A first for me in a) using a lathe, and b) making a brush. It may not be the best brush out there, but I have the joy of having crafted it, which will translate to even more joy in using it. I might even have a go at making some more down the track. Thanks for looking.

For a first attempt thats a brilliant effort! I really like the look of this, It kind of has the look of a whiskey barrel! In fact that wouldnt be a bad design for a handle.......!

Nice bit of turning Mick, you might want to go for a more durable timber next time though, I don't think pine will hold up very well, it's not known for it's water repellent properties, I've found in the past no matter how much timber is treated against moisture some always finds it's way in eventually especially with the soaking the brush is likely to get.

Thanked: 2027Thats fantastic, will serve you well,But I offer a word of caution on the lathe.
LAD, is a sickness far greater than RAD,HAD and all razor related disorders combined, trust me I am an expert (I have 4 lathes before you realize it, LAD, can take over your life. You will just have to have a oneway chuck (made in Canada) or several of them, and all the attachments,Oh and carbide turning tools (a full set)life is not worth living without them.
Beware,you have been warned make chips.not war.Enjoy.

Thanked: 4Mick is a very good one! I like the colors, a good choice for the black badger knot. I never knew lathe, I'm only restored old, nice looking shaving brush. If this is the first, what will the other...
