The two treatments that I use that hasn 't(as yet) damaged a brush are: Dawn Dish Soap and Borax.
If the Dawn won't hurt a sea bird it won't hurt your brush. And the Borax also works great and will 'kill' most 'bugs' and bacteria.

yep, the borax and some mild soap is the best deal. Soak and work, soak and work for about an hour or so and your problems should be over.

Oh and watch those references to the Goat. I know some goats who are mighty fond of certain shaving paraphernalia. Also they be very sensitive animals and get their feelings hurt real easy like.

Soak, rinse, then a couple of test lathers does wonders, especially if you test lather with a fresh stick of Arko!

I lather, rinse, dry, lather, rinse, dry in a sunny window. That normally does it for me.

The old goat is tamed... I shampooed the smelly brush 3 times, left it hanging outdoors for dead for a couple of days, re-shampooed and soaked it for an hour before re-hanging outdoors again on the meat pole. Now the thing only has a waft of stink and it may be usable in the morning. (My dog keeps trying to lift its leg on it...) But anyway, if not cured, the beast (brush not dog) goes back out to the goat pen!
