Thanked: 88You're not looking to break the bank when you buy a pure/black badger brush. The one I bought from Whipped Dog is big and performs well, and was under $20.

Yeah, Sam, that is where I got my Black badger from in the past. They have a rocking boar and a great 2 band and nice silvertip. The best badger is good! The black badger is a lot mushy in comparison. They are good folks, I will ask them. A bit hard to figure out what to buy by descriptions on their site, but 2 thumbs up to the 2 band they sell as well as the boar knots!

I bought a second hand black .,... A.K.A. "Pure" badger made by Shavemac. One of my favorite brushes. A 48mm loft and maybe 21mm knot with great backbone and scritch. A friend has a Plisson pure black that he says has the same characteristics. I've got 3 Semogue boars . Two of the three have no scritch. The third has quite a bit. I like all three though.

Thanked: 1263I have a black badger knot that I bought from Lee Valley and turned my own handle. I find it has way more back bone and is much scritchier than my silvertip.
I do like the brush especially for hard soaps and just to have some variation in the arsenal

Thanked: 2027The grade of hair actually has very little to do with so called backbone IMO.
Back bone is determined mostly by what the loft is set at.
