Thread: Boar brushes? (Pros and Cons)

Hi, I was just wandering around and saw a couple of Semogue brushes that caught my eye (1305 and the 830). I have never owned a boar brush before and I would like to know if there are any advantages or disadvantages versus badger brushes.

In my highly biased opinion boars are the best. I have had only one badger, a Silvertip AOS model. It was nice, but I soon gravitated towards a boar brush. I got a Semogue 830. I even liked it during the 'break-in' period, where the user is waiting for the bristles to become a little softer. Anyway, as far as pros for boar: the expensive ones are not that expensive, they are stiffer/more backbone, once they are broken in they can be as soft as a badger, they are great for loading soaps and face lathering. My silvertip would not be able to handle the soaps I throw at my boar. I have no cons for boars. I am biased. I love boar brushes, especially Semogue brushes. I will say this about my AOS Silvertip experience, it was like having a piece of silk wiped across my face.

I find a boar to be functionally superior to badger, for my hair type (coarse and wiry)-- I use my Omega boar 90% of the time. The only con that I have found, is that boar brushes stink to high heaven when they're new; but you will be greatly rewarded for enduring the putrid stench.

Pros. Inexpensive. Hold less water than badgers. Easy to rinse clean. Good backbone.
Cons. Stinky when new. Hold less water than badgers. Take a little more effort to lather.

Find each to be good, but Horse is Better.

Other than the stink, I find quality boar brushes to be as good, sometimes better than badger. As said, boars are face lathering machines and once broken in, can have tips as soft as a silver tip.

Well, the way I see it, the smell at the beginning might be the only Con, but it will go away eventually. So, I'll go for the Semogue 1305!
