Thanked: 247One the one hand: I prefer NOT using a used brush. On the other, every member of the family washes their body and hands with the same bar of soap...err..except SWMBO, who has separate bottles of product that need applied in some specific order so that they give maximimum beautifying, moisturizing, and youthifying effects....hmm..I don't know. Tough call.
I guess I'd err on the cautious side and buy him a cheapie. I've used a cheapie brush for a good long while now, and can't see any reason to need another. You might buy him the only brush he'll need this decade. That's a gift with longevity.

Thanked: 26I bought two horsehair brushes from bestshave.net--the three dollar ones--and gave one to a friend I was trying to get away from rubbing on cream by hand. Turns out to be a pretty nice brush, but it took forever to get here.

Gentlemen,
A shaver, newbie or old timer, should have his own brush. So, yes, an inexpensive brush will work for starters. I, too, suggest a Tweezerman, or a VDH boar. Let's get the friend started on wet shaving. So start anywhere.

Just make sure you thoroughly clean the brush with soap by swirling it vigorously in a bowl . . . Wait a sec . . .

Nice work! I used one for years until I got the SRP Thater. I gave it to a friend in need, but in spite of the cost of the Thater, I sometimes missed the little green-handled bugger! It was well broken in and worked fine! Hey! They still have them! Hmmmmmm

I rest my case.

I feel, personally, sharing anything that is related to my shaving stuff is weird. But that's just me. Maybe, if it were an emergency, I would think about my hones.

Thanked: 270Just make sure it's sterilized. I would dunk it in Barbacide and then wash thoroughly with soap and hot water.
Yesterday while shaving I nicked my skin under my nose and had a rough time stopping the bleeding. It was a bloody mess to finish the shave. Evidently I didn't get my coffee or something because I shave that area every day without incident. This morning, one day later, I shaved it again without incident.
Bleeding on the brush, followed up by somebody else bleeding on the brush is where you can potentially get in trouble.
Just sterilize it before lending it out and when you get the brush back and you'll be fine.
