I've always used Borax and it seems to do the job. I would imagine any mild shampoo would do just as good.

Okay so I'm going to try out the borax.
Any recommendations on how much to put in one or two cups of warm water? How long to soak?

White vinegar and hot water for all my 50 brushes
No problem at all, it removes any soap residue.
