Scored a 100+ y.o. brush. Thoughts
Hello, gents,
As a part of my effort to make all my shaving equipment a century(ish) old or more, today, I've bought this brush from Etsy:
It's a 1900-20's John L Whiting-J.J. Adams Co. Number 16 with Wood Handle and brass collar. I think that once I give it a good cleaning, perhaps polish the brass and give the bristles (horse hair?) a good shampooing and conditioner treatment, it may be an interesting brush to use.
Has any of you seen or used something like this?

Hi, Gooser--I've been admiring your home-grown hunter-style shaving equipment. Very cool indeed, and great instant classics.
I'll definitely post some progress pics about how the restoration goes!

Well, count me as a prospective and very much interested client, I'm a deer-hunter and I love things like that!

That looks like my kind of brush: nice long handle and a short scrubby loft.
I look forward to hearing your impressions of it."The ability to reason the un-reason which has afflicted my reason saps my ability to reason, so that I complain with good reason..."

Amazing find on that brush. Anyone who knows me knows i'm the first one to tell anybody to take the div e and restore your shaving equipment... but on this one i think it looks awesome just as is. Maybe a nice knot to make it 'new' and usable would suffice IMO. But hey that just me on this one. I'm sure she's gonna look like a million bucks polished up too, but the old rustic look appears as if it has tons of history. YMMV.

Thanked: 45That's a stenciling brush and was not used for shaving. Here's a link to something similar.

Hi, Matt--I was wondering myself before I bought it, but the brush is stamped "John L Whiting-JJ Adams Co Shaving Brush #16" on the brass plate. Sorry for not specifying that.

Thanked: 26If it's the one I just found on Etsy, and it appears to be, it's supposedly got "shaving brush" stamped on it, so I'm inclined to believe that it probably is. Someone else on Etsy has a bunch of similar brushes, and I initially thought stencil brushes, too, and so I didn't buy one. Maybe I'll go back and take another look. [Mad rush ensues, Etsy crashes.]
