Been making some brushes...
So, I have been restoring brushes for a few years now. Love that process of breathing new life into old discarded equipment of yesteryear. This is a familiar theme for us wet shavers. Recently, however I began to make my brush handles from scratch. I had some scraps of exotic wood and glued them together and without a lathe (or lathe skills) used my various shop tools to come up with something that I liked using a lot. I then began to experiment with other techniques and was able to use a drill press and a mandrel to actually turn a few pieces using rasps for shaping dowel blanks. It's not a lathe, but I got some good results I would like to share. Any constructive criticism is welcome.
Here are some restores I did:

Sorry, ran out of picture limit on the previous post.
Here are the other restores:
And here are my shop-made ones.
This is the first one made with a table saw and a sander. The finish is two ton epoxy painted on thick. It's like glass. I like this finish.
Here are some drill press turned pieces:

As you can see, I am partial to two band badger. These are all TGN knots. I absolutely love them. Have not had a bad one yet, though they have changed over time and I do prefer older ones, with straight ends vs hooked ends better. Still, these are phenomenal brushes. Some of the ones I made were direct competition to a $185 Chubbie two band. I love Simpson brushes and all, but a custom made brush the way I like it at a third of the cost is enough to keep making my own.

Thanked: 40Those drill turned pieces are stunning. For the last three pics (3 colored wood? of some sort) what material did you use? I love those patterns.

Thanked: 1184Very nice. Used what you got and made some nice brushes, love it. Did you texture the Duck brush or remove some dents ? I have an M3 with black badger. Love the black and silver combo and your white tips look fantastic.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

They are all great, but I think I'm in love with the metal one!
