    Default Trying out different shapes

Well after some experimenting with the new toy I figured it was time to try my hand at making some handle shaped firewood. Not quite comfortable handles but it's a start.

    Looks pretty good!
It looks like you are using a waste block to make these...

Because I don't have a chuck, I drill the hole for the knot...(Whatever Size you are using) Then use a number 7 drill (13/64)...then tap it to 1/4 20.
You can then either use a 1/4" bolt around 2 or-3" long with the head ground off or a bottle stopper mandrel and put that in your drill chuck on the lathe.
That way you have enough room to drill the hole for the knot and have a way to finish the bottom off also.

I just put a 4" piece in and used a separating tool to remove it. Haven't gotten to the knot hole yet...

Now think how are you going to drill the hole and be square. Also how are you going to hold it?

Haha yeah not sure yet... I was thinking of using a waste block glued to the handle material so I can drill the hole. For finishing I've seen the waste block tapered to tightly fit the knot hole. It's a little wobbly but stable enough to sand and finish.
