Thanked: 2284Two new silvertip Brushes.
I spend a lot of time on wood-database.com reading about woods and their different properties. Some are very interesting, and a lot I've never heard of before. I was on there the other day and stumbled upon an article called the top ten best woods you've never heard of.
http://www.wood-database.com/wood-ar...e-never-heard/
Some I have used but most I have not. A few of them really caught my attention and I will be, most definitely acquiring some. The first one on my list was Chakte Viga. To Ebay I went, and found a supplier right here in Ontario that carries it and a few others.

So last night I hopped on my lathe, just to get under the wax of the Chakte Viga, and see what all the fuss was about. One thing lead to another and I had 2 brushes done. Chakte Viga is kind of a weird wood. It turned great, but when it came time to sanding, weird things happened. Every single grit (started at 120 like I always do) the wood clogged up the paper. I mean badly!
So enough blabbing about the wood. Here's the two brushes I made.
The longer, Yellow/orange one, is the Chakte Viga. It's sporting a Virginia Seng 23.5mm silvertip badger knot, set to a loft of 50mm. It has a certain Chatoyance when tilted in the light that is just amazing.
The second brush is Bacote and real Lignum Vitae, and obviously a clone of a Simpson chubby. Again, it has the same knot, set at 50mm as well. Both brushes have a high gloss CA finish.
I must add that this was my first time using Vitginia Sheng knots from ebay, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the knots. If you guys are looking for a cheaper ST badger knot, I wouldn't hesitate to try these. Heres the link to the ones I bought.

Thanks for looking guys. Maybe we'll see some more crazy wood on SRP in the future!Last edited by HARRYWALLY; 10-10-2014 at 07:18 PM. Reason: My amazing spelling

Both brushes are gorgeous. I like the coloring of the Chakte Viga , might have to look into a bit for myself as well.
So I drive a station wagon , what of it ? ( www.lxforums.com )

Thanked: 2284It really is a perfect material for a brush handle. You could leave the wood raw, with no finish, and it would (probably) never be effected by the shaving elements. If you read about it, it has been noted to last over 100yrs. in the ground.
Edit, oops, up to 100yrs. in the ground.Last edited by HARRYWALLY; 10-10-2014 at 07:27 PM.

Thanked: 2027I Did read it.my problem is I have so many woods, am not buying anymore at this Time.
I have a friend that owns a company called Globalwoods,he spends mos. in so. America Buy huge amts of exotics,he tells me there are woods he has seen that do not even have names yet.
I used to buy the off the wall stuff when I saw it,mostley African and Indian woods which can no longer be imported, the same will happen with the south American woods down the road.CAUTION

You're just outside Kitchener you should head down to Burlington to Products - Exotic-Woods they have a ton of wood available. They also custom order. Dangerous place for me, I get lost in the options.

Thanked: 2284I've been wanting to go there, looks like a great store. I know what you mean by a dangerous place. I go to A&M woods in Cambridge all the time and generally I have to out stuff back before I go and pay. I'm like a kid in a candy store!
There's also an excellent brewery there! Nickelbrook brewery, they have great beer and also the best root beer too.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Fantastic Brush !
Here is the brush from post # 1,,,, used tonight with some Taylor of Old Bond Street, Eton College. Andrew, you made a beautiful brush, soft on the face, yet stayed strong in the lather. This is the first new brush I have used, that did not loose one hair,,,, a really tight knot.
Thank you ,,,,,,,
