I still can't wrap my mind around the scales but the bowl pfffff no brainier. Your making my mind explode. I am wondering about using just 3 colors or patterns.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Gotta match the other two pieces so I'll stick with the multicolor. I'm thinking I might use a casting resin and mount them on veneer. We'll see

Edit, your idea of two or three colors would make for cool looking scales though. Like a honey comb!

I was just thinking that putting them into a bundle and then do the same thing you would to make micarta more or less could work.

Awesome creation! I've seen thing's done with pencils but never crossed my mind to actually do it. If it were me I would have been holding my breath waiting for the tool to touch down and the piece to grenade.
I've often though about taking all the dust and turning materials that are thrown out, sucked up by the vacuum and glue it up into a blank. I may have to try this now

My worst thought was exactly as you said. All of a sudden this things going to explode! Worst case, If it does explode, you just walk away and chalk up the $6 you paid for the pencils as fun. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Another thing I've been experimenting with is melting down HDPE plastic and forming a blank, and then turning it. Most cartons we use are made from HDPE containing our milk, juice, oil, cleaners, you name it. I've been somewhat successful, just need to get things baking in the oven a little longer. Got a new toaster oven so I'll be trying it again soon. Here's a handle I did but it starting de laminating while turning it. It didn't bake long enough in the oven to fuse it all together. This was a black 10w 30 oil bottle, and a white milk jug.

I like it! Visually pleasing. The bowl, if you do one, should also be a stunner.

To see something that would have been tossed out as garbage or sent to a recycler, turned into an art piece, is a thing of beauty. Thank you,,,,,,,,,,
