Much denser, and seemed a little more prone to tear out than young oak. The turning filings were nearly brittle and crisp like as they hit the floor. Seemed almost petrified, but not quite in its reaction to the tools. Needed a very sharp edge or things got fuzzy quickly..
I saved a brush sized chunk for you to try out when we see each other again. Am curious as to your thoughts on it as well.
    Sweeeeeet!

How do you like that Shella cream? I really like it initially but found it lost its luster very quickly. I've had my can for 2 years now and it's no longer cream. More of a liquid now. Not sure what vanished out from it.

Tried to do some spiraling but the wood was not a candidate for it. Despite its hardness compared to fresh oak, it still couldn't take a tight spiral without tear out.
Ah well, every turn is experience..
    Cheers.
The shellacream needs to be remixed as the solids drop out in time.
I still like it for certain items or quick finishes, but it does need a rerun now and then for sure.

    Beautiful work as always Mike.

That is a great looking hunk of oak there, very nice brush! Interesting material for sure. I assume it is pretty impervious to the elements as it sits. That is one I have never messed with ..yet I did find myself reading up and pricing hunks on eBay today between events at a swim meet haha Gotta love modern technology.

    Very nice !

Pretty neat! I have a small chunk of Kauri from New Zealand that is old but that is more like a balsa.

My dad had a chunk of wood from a gravel pit that was probably from the last ice age in MN but when it was removed from underground and dried it expanded and cracked....

Seems the drying is quite the elaborate process to prevent, or minimize that from happening in the places this harvesting occurs. Probably all part of the pricing for it. Certainly adds to the fear of screwing up while working with it, lol.
